heat, heat, heat.... if they are original, they are also glued in... heat them up with a propane torch till u see the glue bubble out.

Glue? That's the first time I've ever heard that. My factory shop manual says nothing about glue.

What you've got are caps that are probably rusted in there. I assume you've soaked them down with PB Blaster or something similar.

I had to use a large ballpein (or ballpeen, depending on how you want to spell it) and place the yoke on a 2x4. Using a socket or something else you don't mind sacrificing as a punch, you have to beat the living crap out of the cap by placing the socket on it and trying to pound it out the other side.

Like is shown halfway down on this page: http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/repair/U_joint/repair.htm

Just like RobD said. It can take some hammering to get the little suckers out of there.

When I do it I take it and have somebody press them out though.

Yeah, I had the pound the crap out of the thing to get it to budge. Once it does, it's not too bad.

X2...

As well, you may have to pound in one direction, flip the shaft and pound in the other, and back and forth until the caps come loose. My last job was like that. And, I've had others in the past.

There is no glue in the u-joints.

cut them out with an grinder and be done with it. You won't be using them again anyway.

would it be too much to ask you to go out to your truck and take pictures and describe exactly how to use a right-angle grinder, or even Dremel, to cut the u-joints out without damaging the drive shaft?

Actually, I had to use my 4 1/2" angle grinder once I got them to move. I could only get one yoke off, so I simply cut through the U-joint between the cap and the main part of the + .

It can be done. Just be careful where your power cord is because you can slice through it very quickly if you're not watching. Don't ask me how I know this.

Worse comes to worse take it to a driveline shop. They are much cheaper than a stealership or even regular shop and they can pop the old out and new one in in no time. We have an awesome one here in Boulder - Boulder Driveline, and he pretty much rules... While your at it (if you go to a ship) have them check your DL balance... It can't hurt!

I usually save my do it yourself ujoint replacements for on the trail repair

A big vice and an oversized socket works for me.
