Question 2003 4th Gen. 4Runner Trivia: What the hell are these for??

When I first picked up my 2003 Runner Limited from the dealer there was the usual stuff included: a box with the tow ball in it, the rear headphones, yadda, yadda.

Yet there was also a small bag with four 3 inch rubber *things* that sure look like they belong somewhere on the truck.

I asked the sales person at the time, the parts dept., nobody had any idea what they were for. So I am throwing it out to the board. Have a look at the pictures at the link below and tell me what your guess.

My guess is they have something to do with the roof rack... Any ideas, or better yet: real answers?

WHAT THE HELL AM U?

Thanks!

UB

when they were building the truck, one of the guys has a hobby for writing mystery novels. well he was a little frusterated he couldn't make it a carrer and he ended up building cars instead, so he threw those in to satisfy his desire for mystifying others. i bet he's reading this right now, laughing, proud of himself for stumping someone. looks like you've been had by an overseas hack mystery writer.

either that, or my guess it's some replacement part...who knows. there's lots of other 2003 owners here, maybe someone can provide a real answer

They are door edge guards. The ones that are most commonly used are white, opaque colored and are more round.

So what's the prize?

Could be...

I think I may have figured it out, though the *excellent* suggestions were great. :pig:

They fit nicely into the inner rail grooves of the roof rack at all four inner corners. I don't recall seeing this or not on other 2003's, will need to look next time I'm at the dealer.

Can anyone with a fourth gen confirm? Who knew buying this rig would be like a owning a mystery novel, where things go rattle in the night and mysterious parts turn up that even the dealer cannot identify! Sweeeeeeeeet!

Hey UB,

You got headphones for the rear audio? How many? I had to buy mine! When I bought the 4Runner I did not pay attention to the rear audio, just that it had the JBL system.

Thanks

BigStew,

The headphones came with the truck. Two pair, plus a remote control all wrapped up and sitting in the back seat. I have seen others that did not have them, thought they should have. The dealer told me that people often swipe them on test drives...

The one thing that was supposed to come with mine, but was missing, was a first aid kit. Not that I need one or care, just was on the list of items that were to come with the truck.

Mine came with a remote and phones but no first aid kit. I don't think it was supposed to come with the headphones (tucked in the console and back by the jack-weird huh?).
Totally useless for me since I don't have kids. I'll just keep them and in 20 years people can see my "sano" 4Runner and say, "Hey, those are the OEM remote and phones in pristine condition!"

The first aid kit was an option ($25) for SE, it was not a standard feature of your vehicle. Goto Costco and buy a real first aid kit, the Toyota kit is useless.

Yes, get a first aid kit. Bandaids and asprin are one of those things that you never have around when you really need them so if you keep a first aid kit in you rig (well stocked of course) then you will always have these items on hand. Just my $.02
