Ok, here it is. First I smell gas pretty bad so I check underneath can't see anything wet. So I go out cruzing again, and there's the smell again. I figure I'll drop the tank and have a little look. I dropped the front end of the tank and turned the engine over then quickly jump out and check my pump. Holy S%^* it looks like the sprinkler on my front lawn. So I drop the tank all the way down and en up with two broken lines and ALOT of gas. Now here is the problem... patched up the lines put everything back together where I think it belongs(lines) and now I can't get the damn thing to start. If anyone can throw some ideas please throw them this way. And if you have some actual pictures of the underside and what lines go where I would REALLY like to see them.Thanks in advance.

 

yea, had a similar problem in that same area. WHen I fixed mine, just looks like its an area that collects water.. so the lines rusted through.

SO, if its not starting and assuming you didnt mess the wiring to your pump.. its not patched up.

replace the whole line. Its so easy. NOw, when I went to toyota to buy a oem fuel line for a 91 runner.. dosent exist anymore. There inventory showed 2 somewhere in the US, but where they had no idea. Just buy the fuel line from a auto parts and fix it up. IT cost me 20 bucks in certified line the right size, I reused the connected from the old line. 10 bucks for a tube bender from autozone and took seriously about 1 hour to install. Replaced the fuel fiter while I had it ripped down. Just rip out the old line, run the new line along the side as the old, I bought some quick ties to keep it up.. and wham 2 years later. PERFECT.

 

I had the same problem when I tried to buy a brake line for my 1995 ext. cab pickup. The dealer said it was no longer available. But they do have them for 1989 trucks so I'll buy that one instead. (I looked under a 1989 truck and the lines are the same). A line from a newer or older truck should work.

If the fuel lines broke at the plate on the fuel tank, you will need to replace the fuel pump bracket.

 

Ok that's great. but I'm not sure which lines go where? I have two lines on the drivers side. That i'm not sure goes where, one goes to the pump and one goes to the return. What happens if they are mixed up? also how long should it take to get fuel back to the engine? I'v run my Battery down twice and it seems like its now trying to catch.

 

go up front and follow the lines back to the pump. and yep, allllll auto parts stores have fuel line you can bend into place, easy as that....

 

I realize that but the old ones are so brittle I'm not sure it I can use flared connections or not? Also a diagram of the top of the pump would be very helpful too. So I would know what lines go where.

I bought a new fuel pump bracket and fuel lines about 4 weeks ago from my dealer. Took one day for them to arrive.

Unlike some parts, you should be able to get fuel and brake lines forever since they can be CNC bent. Whenever Toyota runs low on inventory they have the supplier CNC bend some more and ship them to the distribution centers.

I have a 91 p/u 3vze with a leaky fuel line. It leaks just before the filter...I just got this truck (FREE ) and just need to get it home, so I can go to town on her.... what do u guys thing the chances of replacing the bad section with rubber hose are? I have to travel approx 15mi at speeds from 20-50mph. Think the hoses will hold long enough to get me home? Sorry for the thread hijack.

 

If you want to use the rubber hose as a short term replacement (like the 15 mi drive to your house) that is probably ok. After you do it you may want to do a short test drive and check for leaks before you take off for home.

any idea what size hose I should get? Id rather not have to make a trip to get a piece of the old line, then go match it at parts store, and have to go all the way back...thats 2-3 hrs drive.

 

My guess would be 3/8 inner diameter fuel hose with hose clamps on each end.

 

yep...thats the one...thnx...I did replace the bad section, and another hole appeared just behind it.... looks like I'm gonna have to get the lines from the stealer, I dont think any local stores carry this line with the right ends.

 

I just put my tank back in after frame weld and Chevy leaf swap and you guessed it fuel line leak. It appears to leak mostly from a steel fuel line on the pump bracket. i am guessing this is the pump line as it sprays like a lawn sprinkler. I am hoping to make a bandage by slipping a 3/8 inch section of rubber hose over it and clamping it. I want to switch to propane, so I really don't want to spend anything repairing this fuel system. But propane has to wait until I get all the suspension issues worked out from years of prior owner abuse.
any suggestions? Can I buy the whole line from an auto parts store or do I have to go to the dealer, and how much should this cost?

 

Just price both lines to the fuel filter(it's 2 pieces apparently), and both totaled just around $60.
The rubber hose thing worked for me to get her home, I have even tooled around with it a bit around the pit out back, and still no leaks....I bet it would work for a while, and I may leave it alone for now.
