Finally got the old girl back on the road. Total rebuild. Runs very good so far (22re). I had it professionally bored "20 over" and also had the crank turned and new pistons, rings, brand new cylinder head, etc.

I do have some sort of electrical glitch, however. Whenever I "load" the alternator with a quick load (going from off to high with the fan switch), the engine will cut out just a little.......almost like I'm bogging it down with the current load. Weird. Otherwise, engine runs great.

Also have a problem with the high/low switch for the headlights. The high beams always work, but sometimes the low beams won't come on unless you work the switch a little (cycle it on and off a few times).

Now that I think about it, I didn't hook up the ground wire going from the back of the cylinder head to the firewall (wire was junk). Maybe I should start with a new wire and see what that does.....I'll have to ask the two clowns in the pic and get their advice!! They love riding in the truck.

that's a fine looking runner man; at least you decided to keep the 22re, not swap it out for the 3.4 or something, lol.

 

As stated before check the ground wires to the engine block. They could have been easily missed when re-installing the engine. Also while you are at I'd check the ground from the battery to the body, and the 12+ from the battery to the fuse block. I've seen another post floating around here where people experienced similar issues - engine cutting out under a load. They replaced that wire and all was good.

I ran across that write up a while ago and wanted to do that to my 1st gen 4runner just to be on the good side of the power gods. It is very simple to understand and follow and gives great detail for the process.

 

Update:

Ran a couple extra ground wires from the cylinder head to the frame and then off the negative terminal to the frame. Totally solved the problem!!

Also, did you repaint, or do you have a Texas truck?

 

I think your headlight problem might be dirty contacts. Check 4Crawler's website for more info on that.

 

holy crap you have exactly the same truck I do, the same color even, cept I got a 3.0 and 31's, it no one knew that they wouldnt be able to tell the difference.
