1994 3.0 starter
Well yesterday my starter went out. im gettin a bump start from a friend in the mornin and goin to the shop where they have a new one waitng for me. theyre gonna run the test to make sure its my starter not the solenoid. this isnt a common problem for these trucks is it? i have 2 friends that have the same engine and both have over 150k miles and have never changed the starter

I think your starter is made with replaceable copper solenoid contacts available from the dealer for less than $10. Often these just wear down to the point where electrical contact can not be made and the starter cannot be energized. You may want to check that out before committing to the new starter. Or, at least, take your old one apart and see if that is all that is wrong. If you can fix the old one for $10, it may be worth paying the core on the new one (if any) to keep the old one as a back-up.

But basically, 2-5 miles per hour will start it, as long as you're quick on the clutch and there isn't any other reason why the truck won't start. If you can't hit 2 MPH...maybe put the transfer case in 4-lo... that'll make the engine spin over quite a bit more, but will also hurt your kidneys.
