Carb gremlins

So my stock 83 carb just started acting up like 2 days ago. Driving me nuts and i cant figure it out. It idles HIGH, very high. Like 1900-2300rpm. Same time it started to diesel like 1/3 shutoffs.

It has no vacuum leaks anywhere. First thing i check. Adjusting the cold-idle and normal idle do nothing.

It does seem like the choke is sticking, the butterfly is always halfway open and if i open it full by hand it idles down! So i tried wiring it fully open and then would not start if it was shutoff for more than 2 hours

I lubed up all the linkage, and it moves very easily. I heard something about a dashpot?? But i swear my carb doesnt have one, its a canadian carb with like 4 vacuum lines on it.

The dieseling is most likely that my fuel cut-off is going to die??? I find it weird that they both start acting up same day. Besides that the carb works great and makes great power, Starts up everytime with no gas in less than a second.

Now this might be related to the problem, but same day my charge/bat light came on Ive dealt with this problem many times, but this time the system is still charging and the lights wont go out? I pulled the Neg off the battery while running and it didnt die or heistate + i drive at nighttime for 2 days now and my lights havnt dimmed one bit. I pulled that up because i searched and it said that a uncharging system will make the truck idle high???

Any clues guys?

Anybody have a clue? This morning when it was cold it idle exactly at what the cold-idle should be, like 1200-1300. Then as it warm up it jumped up to the 2000rpm range. Its like i have cruise control on when im driving. P-ing me off

Sounds like the throttle is sticking a little. Have you tried pullingn the throttle linkage back? Maybe the spring is not strong enough? happened to me before. This would likely cause the dieseling too.

when my charge lamp relay went out my choke acted up as well. Located under the passenger side of the dash, try tapping it when the lights are on and see if that helps.

That's your problem right there!

The main cause of "dieseling" is a high idle. Fix the idle issue and the diesel problem will vanish.

You either have a bad connection or the alternator/regulator are going out. Pristinely clean EVERY connection from the battery terminals, the connection to the main fuse box, the starter connections, and all related grounding points.

Ok, i took the carb off today and removed all the linkages, cleaned and lubed up. Unscrewed the choke cover and set it good. Now this is before i removed all the linkages, but i noticed that something is missing and im sure the fast-idle screw goes to it.... look at the pics

Would this be a problem?
Anyways ill put the carb back on tomorrow and ill post back.

Brand new Alt, Reg, and battery with all new connections. Im positive its that dang relay under the Pass dash. It goes out sometimes if the pothole i hit is big enough

Sked, if you need me to, I can take a pic of my '83 stock carb, it sure seems like you are missing a linkage there so I'll have to look tonite at mine. In the meantime, look at this link and see if you can see anything amiss.

I think i figured it out. But cory if you still get those pics that would be great, im sure something has to connect there.

But i pulled the voltmeter out and started checking volts @ choke and fuel-cut. Well the choke was getting nada and the fuel-cut off was good at 14.7. All the fuses were good and i didnt really want to start tracing wires so I just wired the choke to the same wire as the fuel-cut. Now she works great and idles where i want it. I dont know about the cold-idle yet, but ill see in the morning.

Well the cold-idle dont work at all. I can live with that for the summer. It starts good in the morning still but will stall if i dont give it 'some' gas here and there. Thats only like for 5 mins the it runs like a champ. Gas mileage went up alot too. Before it was $40 for 100km's lol, now it back to normal.

Im planning on buying a dual-plane intake manifold and a weber 38 just in time for winter. Thanks for the help guys

Actually my cold idle doesn't work either but I've lived with it for summer and winter. Its fine as long as you don't idle very long when its cold.

If your truck doesn`t have a/c then nothing goes to the piece your pointing to, if you had a/c there would be a vacuum operated dash pot bolted to the side of the carb and it would be conected to the piece your pointing to in the picture.
