What did he break on my truck????

I've got an 82 Yota pickup. My little brother was using it in the woods and while going up a steep hill, probably at more speed than necessary, something popped in the trannie and now something isn't hooking up for the truck to either get in gear or something?? The truck won't move, engine is fine, something in the transmission.

What should I do?

Thanks!

clutch most likely. Something letting go in the tranny like that isn't likely. T-case in gear?

I would imagine the Tcase was in gear....I'm not 100% sure on that one though.

marlincrawler.com a pretty good source for parts click here: Clutch page

Remote chance but the 21 spline output shaft in the transfer case has also been known to let go under a severe load. Possible the throw out bearing...

Rowdy235 has the right idea. I have had my stick shift knock the t-case out of 4wd a few times. Check that before getting excited about clutch parts. Have you gotten underneath?---could be a u-joint. If not, then clutch might be the next thing to check. gilby4runner has the right question above too.

Thanks for the help so far.

Does any power get to the tranny? Like if you switch gears with no clutch does it grind? If not its the clutch, if so then its your Tcase. Might be in Neutral or blew it up

^^ good call, let the clutch out, and try to shift into a gear (i'd pick reverse). If it slips in we got a clutch problem, if it grinds we got a problem behind the clutch.

Ok...so I just got done playing around with the Rebel....my '82 pickup is a "Rebel Edition" I dunno if anyone has seen one of these before. And NO I'm not racist for the record.

Anyhow....she goes into gear and drives. I don't know what my bro was talking about with it being broke. This truck seems to heal itself sometimes though, quite odd.

The only thing I can think of is that the shifter has a lot of play in it. Like...it'll go into gear, but you can swing the shifted back and forth quite a bit while it's in gear and when out of gear....to be more specific you can "twist" the whole shifter.

What would have broke to allow this?

Yeah.....that yota is a beast!! The Rebel flag painted on the hood gets some harsh looks though.

I want to make a real off-road truck out of her but the Rebel has a lot of rust on it. Fender flares and bed are pretty rusted. I don't know if it's worth the investment. I'd probably have to totally rebuild it.

This truck was my father's, he bought it new in '82 for $5,000 and it has NEVER broke down until my little bro thought he had busted the trannie up. I took it for a drive today though, runs fine.

It's only got like 160k miles on it, but it's been a wood truck for the past 10 years or so, so they are hard miles for sure! Just debating if I want to put the money into it or not.

Post up a picture of the Rebel Edition, that is something I have not seen.

Your truck seems to be suffering from the most common ailment to stick shift Toyota. The Shifter bushing has probably finally broken up. It is about $20-25 worth of parts and 10-15 minutes to fix. Should just be able to take off the shift boot and remove the stick, drop in the bushing and reinstall the stick.
Here is a link that shows the part: http://www.marlincrawler.com/docs/sh...eat/index.html

If your truck is suffering from a broken shifter lever seat this is a great write up: Shift Lever Seat Replacement Write up

I'll take some pics tomorrow, be forewarned though I have used this truck for all it's worth, it's def not a pretty shiny truck. It has quite a few dents and dings.
