New engine - no oil pressure

I just rebuilt my engine. In the rebuilt kit was a new oil pump and housing. I just started the engine for the first time and I do not have any oil pressure. To prove this I took off the oil sender off the block and started the engine. Nothing came out... ANy suggestions anyone..

Did you prime the oil pump? I've heard of some guys packing vaseline into the pump to prime it. The vaseline comes out with the first oil change.

The new oil pump came pe-packed with a grease.... All completely stripped the engine and had it hot tanked so the passages should be good-to-go

most of the time when an engine doesn't have oil pressure, I check the following things in order

Oil in engine (never owned a car that didn't leak or burn it)
Sender functioning
Pump Working (Repack if necessary; then check key for drive, gear, etc.)
Passages clogged

Well I put oil in yesterday... 5 quartz... I dont know about the sender working but pulling the oil sender out of the block and running the engine for about 20 seconds and no oil came out. I really hate the thought of pulling the oil cover, what a pain. I cwas really hoping someone has had this problem before... Thought about putting some oil in the pressure relief valve in the top of the oil pump housing (like priming the pump)

Turn the Ign. switch on and ground the oil sending unit wire directly to the frame. Check to see that your gauge is funtioning.

I don't know how much oil I would expect to see coming from the sending unit passage, it is quite a small hole. The older trucks run about 5 to 7psi at idle. I would expect to see some oil, but not shooting out all over the place. Besides that is not the best way to check oil pressure. You need a real pressure guage. Good luck.

Sounds like one of the 3 oil gallery plugs were left out. All too common!!

If they left the rear one out you would see oil pouring from rearmain area. At idle my oil light was on, when i revved it went off. Thats with all 3 plugs out. Did you put a gasket between your block and the pickup tube?

ok....I have oil pressure.. The machine shop says they never take out the oil gallery plugs and recommend that I fill the oil filter then run the engine at a good speed. They felt the oil pump wasnt priming.. Well I did it... I just hope the H.E. double toothpicks I didnt hurt anything.. It seem alittle noisy to me but Im not sure what it should really sound like. I know the previous owner always had trouble with leaky exhaust system.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyones help...

Oil Pressure problem

Ive searched this forum but still cant find my problem.

I just rebuilt the engine with a new master rebuild kit whick included a new oil pump.

When I first start the engine (either hot or cold) I dont show any oil pressure and get alot of engine noise until the oil pressure comes up. It could take up to a minute of higher RPMs to see pressure but most often oil pressure comes up in about 15 - 30 seconds. It almost sounds like the oil is draining from the system and loosing prime when the engine it turned off.

Surely others have had this problem.

Any help is appreciated.. Im nervous about starting an engine with no oil pressure

Do you have an oil filter with an anti-drainback valve?

check your timing cover /top oil pump bolt !! (this is a pic of the back side)

if it is the wrong one , it could contact the tensioner , and hinder it's performance , and reduce oil pressure .

WRONG BOLT will go threw the cover

correct bolt , will NOT go threw the cover

.

Hmm, that's good info. I'll have to check mine out! Off hand do you know the correct length of that bolt?--------Hans

Thanks, That may be causing my intermittent timing chain noise!
