oil pressure

When I start the 4runner(after it has been sitting for a while) the oil pressure does not come up right at first. Sometimes it could take 20 seconds or so to start coming up. Ive heard this can be normal but this really anoys me. Is there anything I can do to get the pressure up sooner.

is there enough oil in it? maybe a new sensor? It could be a little blocked/clogged after sitting for a while. Did you check wiring (shouldn't be it though). Get a mechanical guage and check it to see if it's your actual gauge or not. Just do some simple trouble shoots

I guess it could be a sensor...it does have a mechanical gauge and it shows no oil pressure for about 20 seconds too (along with the top end noice that goes away once the pressure comes up)

I am pretty sure the wiring is correct too..I am just so worried about ruining the engine...

Mine does the same thing, and I've got a new gauge on it. I dont know what to do different on it that would make it come up quicker. I did throw some Lucas oil stabalizer on when i changed my oil, in hopes thaat it would leave enough of a residue on everything that it wouldnt damage anything.

It is very frustrating. Ive got the toyota oil filter with the one-way vale built into it (supposably). I cant think of anything on the oilpump that could cause this too.

I was really hoping someone has found out what is causing this or some after market piece that will fix the problem.

This is driving me crazy

I have asked before and I got some great suggestion but I still havent been able to fix the problem.

My oil pressure take 20 - 30 seconds to start registering on the mechanical and electric gauge.

I believe that the oil is draining back into the oil pan when the engine turns off. I heard that the toyota oil filter has a back-flow preventer built into the oil filter and I am using a toyota oil filter.

I know that other people dont have the same problem...

Please...Please...Please can anyone help me with this?

I actually do have the same problem. And my buddys 4runner does also. Maybe not 20-30 seconds but it does take an annoying amount of time to get pressure. And both of these are with aftermarket gauges.

An oil pump can wear out or go bad for what ever reason, i just had to replace the oil pump on my 86 4Runner because it went bad and chewed up the gears inside of it, i have no idea what caused it, but i replaced it with a new pump and new spline gear and everything is good again, so maybe your oil pump is bad or is going bad.

It takes my mechanical gauge a few seconds to register when I crank it up. I run a Toyota filter. When I first crank it up, it makes a "clack clack clack" noise for just a few seconds. Not too sure what it is. The engine was rebuilt about 2,000 miles ago. I've been wondering if it is a defective oil pump (it's brand new and I know that new parts can go bad).

Can anyone answer these questions

Earlier I started a thread about my oil pressure problem..

Here is a picture of my (85 4runner 22RE) oil pump.
I have taken the grears out and looked but I dont see how this this thing pumps oil. Since I am haveing trouble with it taking a long time (20-30 seconds) to build oil pressure does anyone see anything wrong??

Can anyone explain these mysteries of the universe??

Looks good to me, might have to looked it over with the FSM and check tolerances. Have you tried putting a REAL gauge on to make sure that your oil pressure takes that long?

Yea just like that animatied pic up there it uses 2 gears to pump oil as i passes through both gears and is forced in a hole. Any who your gauge may not be working properly. Is there bookoo engine noise to where it seems like lack of oil? You can try replacing the pump but your guage might be fualty.

Ths is a fairly newly rebuilt engine with a new oil pump. It has always taken a long time to build oil pressure..

Is there oil in the engine? Or even enough? Should be full.
