Well I'm still waiting on a dang phone call about that 81 SR5 and while I was waiting I started going through the classifieds and found a 1981 Toyota "hilux". The web is a little vague about it so I thought I'd come to the source and ask ya'll what the difference is between a hilux/SR5/standard truck.

This one is here in town and looks pretty good (also about 1500$ less than the SR5 in Santa Fe). Has a 20r motor, I'm guessing this one is smaller than the 22r, a four speed and a pretty straight body from what I could tell in the pictures.

Worth buying for 2000$ for a daily driver?

Oh and I found another one out here that's been frozen in a pond for several years........ it still starts and runs but the seller just can't get it unstuck. He wants 300$ for it if you can get it out of the pond.

 

any truck that has the OFFICIAL hilux name is a diesel. as i'm sure most are aware that in the late 70's-early 80's Toyota was aloud to sell diesel in usa, and they did. so the Hilux is completely different to the SR5 truck and the standard pick-up.

The hilux was stopped in usa in the early years in usa/Canada but was obviously continued for the rest of the world. so only in Canada/usa can you find Tundra's and Tacoma's because the rest of the world uses Land Cruiser pick-ups (tundra equivilant) and the Hilux (Tacoma equivilant).

 

A Hilux is what the rest of the world calls our 'Pickup.'
A Hilux Surf is a 4Runner equivelant.

 

I believe the Hilux was the name of every pickup sold in North America. My '82 is a Hilux, but it is really just a long box pickup. There is a section on 4x4wire.com/toyota/faq that lists all the models from the '79 hilux and up. Pretty much all of them were Hiluxes until 84 when they introduced the xtra cab and 4runner.

 

The SR5 is a trim package. The early trucks got chrome around the window, had different door handles, stuff like that. My 82 is a SR5, it has power steering, slider back window, but does not have tilt steering. So I dont know if those were associated with the SR5 badge or not.

 

get out there to the ice with a tow truck, and go to work with a cement cracker jack. you know, those things you use to crack concrete with... do that with the ice, and have the truck tow it out. . though.... i dunno bout the underbody... the frame is probably rusted to hell

 

I'm really considering it. I figure if I can get that off road rig this afternoon then I'll have something to haul a stuck truck out of the ice with. My wife would poop puppies if I brought home two rigs in the same week......

 

Haha, thats stuck pretty good! Thats not gonna be coming out of there anytime too soon. The whole front end is gonna be frozing solid right into the huge block of ice. I guess for $300 its worth a shot, but I think you will end up screwing it up, better off waiting till spring and getting it out in one peice. What are the temps like around there?

Toyota trucks were called Hilux worldwide until 89 when Toyota dropped the name in North America and called the 89-95 gen a "pick up", very creative! Then we called the next gen a Tacoma. Everywhere else in the world still calls them Hilux's.

 

That picture is wild......where is that, that its been stuck for YEARS???

 

It's down in Taos. The owner says it's been back there for a little over 2 years. Still starts and it'll move a few feet back and forth but no way to get it out.

Toyota introduced the hilux everywhere (including the US) in 1969
in 1974, the USA's hilux was renamed the pickup
in 1995.5, the US pickup was renamed the tacoma
It is still called the hilux in other countries

4runner= Hilux Surf
Pickup/Tacoma= Hilux
