92 4runner w/periodic clicking/flashing lights, nothing else will function

after many stop and go errands around town and a quick car wash...approx. 3 hours later upon simply opening the driver door (key only in the door lock so far...), a combination of electrical components...
(e.g. all dash lights, blinkers, the eject button (only) on the radio, headlamp warning noise, flashers, etc),
start rapidly blinking about 15-20 times, along with a loud clicking sound from underneath the drivers side dash, then stop. A couple of seconds later, this sequence repeats. And repeats...etc.

This seems to be triggered by no prompting from me, and there is absolutely no response from the starter or ignition or any other component.
If I turn the key to the on position, all my power functions i.e. windows, radio, etc. are fine; or if I turn it off completely, again all that should work, does.
But even after locking up, the lights will still flash on and off for that period of 20ish blinks. Sometimes when I haven't been anywhere near it, sometimes not at all.

I might have heard some faint noises from my fuel pump behind me at first but no longer sound, and I'm not 100% on that.

I checked the transmission...in park with e-brake on. Battery/spark wires/etc. all okay.

**the morning after**
I tried to start it again this a.m.; same response. No voltage variation or loss; dash reads 12V while everything else is going nuts. I'm going out to start checking fuses now...fuses fine. After listening underneath the steering column, I have determined the clicking noises is near there. soo, either the fuel pump relay or ignition switch??? going to grab my meter and start testing...

ignition switch, fuel pump relay, efi relay, and circuit opening relay all check out.

there is a switch , I think might be an added fuel pump switch. I just never noticed til I couldn't start my car, so I again don't know what it is.

can anyone please help me figure out what it might be?

Do you have an aftermarket alarm or anything along those lines?

So let me get this straight, you just open the door (with the key) and everything starts blinking 20 times? That's the most bizarre thing I've heard of.

One key thing sticks out Quote "and a quick car wash" on the 92's the A piller drain can be a problem . The water can travel right down to the fuse panel if it has a rust hole. I had a wild electrical problem that was coming and going but always water related. I finally found it was this damn drain .. Loose connections , harness chafing and or your door harness has broken wires and it's crossing over Just some more things to check

I went out and messed around with the added on elec. stuff for a minute. The switch turned out to be for the fuel pump. And the extra wiring was part of an old alarm system no longer working. mystery mods...hmmmm...

By the way, thank you so much to everyone who took the time to respond!!
Frustration and electrical components seem to go hand in hand, running out of ideas to try just iced the cake....thanks again!

I was going to say...

That's definitely a problem with an alarm system. There's nothing about these vehicles from factory that operate under any circumstance like that at all.

But, you found it. Congrrrrats.
