Maintenance Questions for a 99 4runner

Ok, I just bought a 99 4runner, 4x4, AT, with 110,000 miles on it. Not sure when any of this stuff has been done so I am going to get it done for peace of mind.

Here are the things I have done:
Mobil 1 synthetic oil and toyota oil filter
Changed front and rear differential oil to mobil 1 gear oil
New toyota air filter
My dad and I will bleed brakes on next clear weekend

Things my mechanic is doing. He is doing the hard stuff and there were a few other things I could do but I figured he was going to have it I mine as well let him do it: All Toyota parts!
PCV valve and rubber grommet
Timing belt
All new belts
Flush radiator and new thermostat and gasket
Water pump
new spark plugs and spark plug wires
transmission serviced
replace fluid in transfer case
clean throttle body

Is there anything else I need to get done?

Take out the MAF and clean it. Do a search on here and there will be a step-by-step write up somewhere. Very easy and can improve throttle response and mpg slightly.

All I'll say is that's a good laundry list of things to do. I can't wait until bonus time in March so I can give my baby the same treatment.

My income tax refund came in today so I went straight to toyota and went to town. the parts guy was like, "what else?" haha

I will call my mechanic and see if he can clean the MAF sensor when he is doing the throttle body! Thanks so far guys!

I can't wait to drive it and see how it runs. do you all think I will be able to tell a difference?

you dont have to get M1 motor oil, any syn on SALE will work just as well if not better.. penzoil platinum has shown to be the best over the counter syn available. i just find a syn on sale. if you dont have a syn on sale then get a good dino oil like maxlife, penzoil, havoline or GTX. all will work very well for you. just remember to change the oil lol

your before cat a/f sensor will crap out somewhere along the line soon, if you want to get ahead of the game, get 2 new nuts, gasket, and OEM sensor for your vehicle. specify cali or non-california

other than all the other stuff, check sway bar links and bushings up front they may be due. also inspect the rear shock upper ends, they may rot and snap out of the mount. mostly only if the thing has been doing full articulation on a regular basis. if it is street only they will be fine

also check the parking brake pivots that they do not bind. may be good to pull the rear drums
and inspect the assembly...you said you'd be doing brakes anyway.

Thanks for the replys and I will check everything else out when I get it back.

My mechanic did the following so far today:
Timing belt (original and needed changing)
Water Pump (he said that inside the front cover was soaked due to it leaking so it is a great thing we got it done when we did)
Thermostat and gasket (was the original)
All the belts were replaced and he said they looked okay but needed it pretty soon.
Flushed radiator and said the fluid was brownish red and filthy. May run it a few thousand miles and do it again to clean it out?? What do you all think?

Things left to do:
Spark plugs and wires
Clean throttle body and check MAF sensor(Might just get a new MAF and replace it for peace of mind. How much are they?)
Service transfer case and transmission.

Hopefully on Monday when I get it back it will feel like a brand new 4runner!!

FYI CONCERNING THE Timing belt job.... (even some toyota tech's do not pay attention to this rule)

#1 Importance: the "harmonic balancer bolt" is a beast of a bolt and is "NON RESUABLE" which mean that you need a new one when the T.B. is done.... and NEEDS to be torqued to wopping 217 ft pounds and NO EXCEPTIONS.....If your Tech did not do this you may be in for some drama down the road... and then again.... maybe not

Put it this way when have my timing belt done at the dealer again at 180K miles... I will buy the $5.00 bolt and personally hand the bolt to the tech and then ask to be present when the tech torques the bolt down to 217 ft pounds....just to make sure this important step/part is done right...
Why don't I do the job myself....? I know my limitations and Yea I'm not confident enough to know that I wouldent miss something and cause a leak somewhere.... AND i don't do timing belt jobs "day in and day out" like these career tech's do....this is why I always have the toyota dealer do the timeing belt job as if the new water pump leaks because it wasent installed /torqued properly... ...It's on "them" (the dealer) to "make it right"
....and rightfully so...

My list for my 180K timing belt Job (as a lot of these parts below with exception to the T.B and outside belts are original and will have 180k miles on them)

1)OEM Toyota timing belt
2) OEM brand new toyota Water pump (with the metal gasket)
3) All accessory/drive belts OEM
4) All new OEM cooling system hoses
5) New cam seals and Valve cover seals
6)New t.b tensioner
7) new pullyies (just in case the pully bearings decide to "go" after the job is done)

AM I MISSING ANY steps /parts PEOPLE....???

All of you guys telling him to replace the air flow sensor are nuts.

those things are not like the old aluminum units. They typically do not have issues, and are generally clean as a whistle.

Replacing the MAF is a pointless expensiven step. Its sorta like replacing the alternator because "well, it will fail eventually". Thats dumb.

According to Toyotapartsales.com:

Mass air flow sensor, 4-runner, 6 cylinder 99-02 $153.76 (list) $109.08 (cost)

Why waste $110?

Theres a reason why we should only clean the MAF, because they can be quite pricey, even at a scrapyard.

Cleaning will cost you about 10 minutes and some kind of cleaner which might be 5-10 bucks.

Replacing it is a hell of a lot more money(I dont recall exactly, but usually $150-300)

I already posted the price, see my above posts.

And there really is no reason to clean the MAF on the 5VZ. Unless you live in a dusty dirty area, chances are its already clean.

Sorry, I forgot the 99-02 were cheaper than the earlier 5VZ MAFS.

If an impact can loosen the crank bolt, then wouldn't it be sufficient to tighten it too?

Definetly not. Never ever rely on an impact gun to set proper torque.

There are several stories on here of guys just using an impact, and the bolt loosening and taking a lot of parts with it.

My mechanic has been a family friend for 19 years and is THE master mechainc at this Toyota dealership. I trust that he made the right choice but will ask him to make sure. Will post back tomorrow afternoon on how the truck feels after I get it back.
