Ok, I have a 99 4runner, AT, 4X4, 3.4l.

This has happened twice so far and I have only had it a week and a half.
When I stopped at a stop sign one time and a street light the other time.

Here is what happened: When I go to give it gas, I will hear the engine Rev just a bit but it won't go, almost like I have it in neutral. Then I will feel it kick in and finally go. The 4runner shifts very smoothly with no issues. At first I thought transmission.

I talked with my mechanic and he told me they really never have any troubles with these transmissions. He told me that it is more than likely the throttle body sticking cause it was cold out when this happened. And from what I described it might just be that.

What do you all think?

 

if your tbody was sticking that bad you wouldnt be able to press the gas pedal and get it to move. It might be trans related depending on how warmed up your truck is when this happens

 

When I read the title, I was thinking t-body but I think it's a trans related issue as well. How many miles are on this trans? Do you know if the previous owner ever changed the fluid? If not, I would try that first.

 

The 4runner only has 110,000 miles on it. I need to find out fast because I have a 1000 mile or 30 day warranty. If something is wrong, I need to get it by there and get them to fix it. I am getting the fluid changed this week as well as a few other things.

 

It wouldn't move at all. then it finally would as if the throttel body finally opened.

 

It's gotta be a transmission problem. How serious? Who knows. If it was able to rev as you say, it can't be the throttle body. It could be electronic or a linkage problem. Talk to your mechanic again, perhaps he misunderstood you. If he insists that it's the throttle body, get a second opinion.

honestly check to see if there's a code even though you dont have a check engine light it may just be the TPS code p0120. i replaced the 1st one around100k and now 50 k later i gotta replace it again. all the issues you are having are the same as mine

 

upon closer inspection, it looks as if the PO put a set of after market spark plug wires on the 4runner. One of the wires is in contact with another hose and you can see white marks like it is burnt. i started it this evening after dark and my dad swore he saw some "arching". I did not see it but I am not saying it did not happen. Could this be an issue with the hesitation and the reason I have only felt it twice?

 

Definitely. I wouldn't even think about it, take it back to them and make them put Proper plugs and wires in it. At the very least, they are responsible for fixing burnt wires. If that doesn't fix it, then go further. That may .02

 

Yeah, because both times it happened were in the morning. One was after the 4runner was only running for a few minutes and the other time was after it was running for 15 minutes. So that could cause the hesitation I was feeling?

I am off all week so I am going to take it up there and get them to look at it. This way I can get them to document it that I took it up there. If it happens again, I am going to get it in writing that they will take care of it if something happens. It is a very very clean 4runner and with only 110,000 miles and 4x4, i had to get it. I got it at a five star dealership, not toyota so they are still going to do the aftermarket plug wires. I want factory wires so maybe I can just use these as spares later on??

 

I don't know much on the plug wire stuff, other than burning them can be the cause of arcing and missing. If they are going to do after market, some people on here have some great info on what plug wires are good and what are not. I wouldn't keep those ones as spares if they are causing you problems, unless you are talking about temporary only. MTL_Runner has a lot of good info with this type of stuff...

 

Good wires and plugs aren't that much. Spend the money on good ones and it becomes one less thing you need to worry about. You get what you pay for.

 

what I meant to say was I was going to get them to replace the aftermarket ones free ones since there is a warranty. I will keep the new ones just in case.

I already have it in the budget to do the following things to my runner:
service transmission and transfer case
timing belt and water pump
Toyota spark plugs and wires
flush radiator and put in a new toyota thermostat and gasket
new PCV valve and rubber grommet
new air filter


I already changed the oil and put Mobil 1 synthetic.

I changed out the front and rear differential oil and put mobil 1 in there as well
greased all the zerk fittings in the driveshaft
belts and everything look fine with no cracks

is there anything else? runner has 110,000 miles
