What is a intake air temp. sensor?? (3VZ-E)

so the 4runner spit out a code 24 at me which says
"INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR SIGNAL--OPEN OR SHORT IN INTAKE AIR TEMP. SIGNAL"

i have got no idea what they are talking about, all i know is the VAF, TPS, and o2 sensors, but i think thats different stuff.

any help?

(oh ya, my main problem is just a lack of power all of a sudden one day. it idels fine, but as soon as soon as there is a load on the engine(driving), its just sluggish, my main suspect is air/fuel mixture, but so far i'm shooting blanks)

Your Mass Air Flow senses the temperature of the air coming in to the engine. Its the box with wires going in and out between the air filter and the throttle body.

As cold air is denser, more fuel needs to be injected to maintain the right air-to-fuel mix to burn cleanly and efficiently.

Beyond that, can't help you.

Most air temp sensors are in the air flow meter. It is used to compute the fuel ratio.

Does the engine feel any different on a colder vs warmer day? Calgary is a cold place.
