May have found my donor truck.... 5sp/auto question

I was talking to a buddy who told me that his friend's girlfriend's dad has a rolled runner he wants to get rid of. i'll get more details about it, year, mileage, etc. today. but from the pic it looks to be 97-98 if i had to guess. I might be able to talk him into 1500 for the whole truck. i'd then be able to part out as much as i can / recycle the rest and make back some money.

however, the truck is an auto, and i;d like to keep my 5sp. from what i've read its best to get a 5sp donor truck, whats different between the auto and the 5sp? i wouldnt think there would be a huge difference since it should be the same motor???

got to take a look at the truck yesterday. here are some pics.

more pics here.http://photography.eakland.net/main.php?g2_itemId=2465

so the truck is CLEAN..... its a 97 with 156 on the clock. red/gray cloth. the truck was rolled about 3 weeks ago, lived under a tarp for 2 days them moved into the barn. so the interior is great. it looks like 3 of the doors are sellable, the hood is perfect. frame *looks* straight and all the front end looks good (resellable).

the only down side is the auto issue. i'm on the hunt to find a 5sp ecu and wiring harness. if they will take 1500 for the truck i think it still will be worth it.

you can use the auto harness, you just need to find a manual ecm with the plugs for the same year, i would suggest one from a taco since they are more plentiful in a 5 speed.

Yes, but you're going to need to find the plugs and ECU from a 5 speed, since the auto ECU is looking for signals from some sensors built into the auto tranny, which, obviously, you won't have. You'll be able to get a few bucks for your auto and transfer case, too, to help offset your costs.

The throttle linkage will have three pulleys, one for the gas pedal, one for the cruise cable, and one for the A/T kickdown. You can eliminate that one.

Otherwise, you should be good to go with the right harness and plugs.

Good luck.

if you have a 5 speed transmission beware that some year auto 3.4s came without the crankshaft end drilled for a pilot bearing, which would preclude your swapping in a 5 speed (short of swapping the crankshaft too)

good find, though.

LOL - Your information about the pilot bearing is FALSE! Have you seen a crankshaft without a pilot bearing hole?

I don't really know anything about the auto tranny and it's benefits or detractions, but...

Seems to me if you can get the whole 4Runner for $1500 you'd be in pretty good shape for a swap. Like you said, there are a lot of parts you can sell that will more than recoup your expenses. If you can handle your own wiring, and find a 5spd ECM you'll be off an running.

Speaking from experience, I think I'd go for it. You might be looking at as much as $400 for the 5spd ECM though, so budget for that. Also, as others have mentioned, you are going to want to get the ECM plugs with the ECM or figure out a source for new plugs from Toyota or equivalent.

As far as wiring, I think you'd just have to "delete" the input wires from the auto tranny. Everything else from the motor would have to be crossed over to the equivalent pins for the 5spd ECM plugs. May sound like a nightmare, but with some patience and the factory EWD for your 3.4... it's a very doable project.

Ide go for it. I wish I found a deal like that for an entire rig, but be sure to get an ecu to match that year 4runner and if you can get it for the 4runner. As for wiring Im around during weekends if you need some help. to the get ecu plugs talk to Jasond and he can get you the part number. he helped me find mine. and check out techinfo.toyota.com for all the wiring diagrams you could amagine, but it will cost you some

I do believe ive seen a guy use an auto ecu with his swap. its out there online and its in a tacoma he did it in.

Let me know if you need any help

Jump all over that if you can get it for $1500

You can use the auto harness, you just need to find the manual ECM that matches the production period for your engine.

Check car-part.com for the ECM you need. I found mine on there in 5 minutes, and cheap at only $80 shipped.

you can use the auto harness you'll just have to do what I did and swap all your plugs. Toyota was retarded on 96-98 trucks/4Runner. They made different ECU plugs for Auto and Manuals. Search for my 3.4 swap thread I have lots of info about the different plugs.
