I installed an auxiliary reverse light, and I want to make sure I don't accidentally leave them on.

I want to have my auxiliary lights to go out when I take the keys out of the ignition. Basically, where's a wire I can splice my relay onto, so that the lights act as if they were on the ACC (accessory circuit).

Take a fusetap and wire it into a fuse that only comes on when your key is in there.

 

i did that to my auxiliary off road lights. i taped the relay into the lead (+) from one of the cigarette lighters (since mine only work when ACC is on). just use a fusetap as CJM mentioned

 

ok why would you want to do that???? if you stop and park in the dark and shut your truck off then you have no lights to see what your doing ie camping or a fun time with the misses or mr's and if you use the lights at night you should see them on and turn them off but if you do use them in the lighter hours of the day and do forget just go to auto zone and get there remote controlled relay pack that way say if you do forget them on and your in the house just hit the remote and turn them off just my 0.2 cents

 

I installed a second switch which is by the tailgate. It works regardless of the position of the key. That's for when I'm camping.

I'm now toying with the idea of hooking up a relay coil to the reverse lights. That way, I don't need a dash switch to tempt me to blind tailgaters. I would still have the switch by the tailgate.

The other alternative would be to hook up the relay coil to the parking lights so that the dash mounted switch only worked when the parking lights were on.

 

If you were really concerned about forgetting to turn off the lights, and running your battery too low, I'm pretty sure they have shut offs you can wire in there that detect when the battery is getting below a certain voltage, and shut it off, so you have enough juice to start er back up again. This is of course if you have a direct connection that is fused and powered from the battery, and works reguardless of the key position, as it is just toggled on when you need it, and you could probably get something to auto shut off when you forget to do it yourself.

It's a neat idea, but I'm not sure if they make those devices. I'll go check.
