Finally i am going to SAS my 88 4runner, i am going out of town to get a solid axle out of 85. Is there anything I need to get from the doner truck besides the axle. I am going to get the trail gear kit which comes with the following parts and since i am going out of town i this is my only chance so any input much appreciated.

All you need is the axle. Well the third too unless you are going to put a V6 third or Hi Pin in. Don't use any of the bearings that come with the TG kit. You'll be replacing them all again within a year. Ask me how I know.

 

what size tires are you planning on running?

 

What should i do about the bearings then?and i will be running 33 most likely but i have 35's right now

 

Buy some quality bearings and sell the chinese crap that comes with the TG kit. Or put them in your trail fix spare parts kit. You can run them till they die too which won't take long but you can mess up the hub if they have a meltdown. It isn't much fun replacing the wheel bearings and knuckle bearings either. Big messy job. Lots of parts to remove.

I musta got lucky on the bearings as I have had no problems in the last year and its not for lack of trying to beat it to death.

 

Or I got unlucky.

 

I was garunteed a 85 front end, the buddy said he was holding one for me but that bugger sold it, he said i could go look out in his yard but they were all 83 or older or IFS . Will an 83 front end pose that much of a difference. I seriosly looked in at like a hunder or more smashed p/u's and 4runners. I found one that had the rear smashed in with a perfect looking front end but it was 83. I want to get this in my garage before it starts snowing all the time. Any input would be great.

 

there really is no difference. I little more trussing on the 84 and 85 housings but other than that they are the same. Just use the 83 your goign to add a truss anyway...

 

Main difference in Toyota front straight axles through the years is the factory gusset. The '85 is generally the most sought after as it has a full length gusset under the axle.

But if you plan to gusset the axle along the top or by some other method, you might enjoy the better ground clearance offered by the older axles.
