Thinking about selling my 4runner

I'm considering selling my 86 SR5 4runner for a newer second generation 4runner. The 86 is a 5 speed 22re with all the options (sunroof, sr5 gauges and interior, cruise and AC) plus I added BJ spacer up front and 3" springs in the back. I want the 2nd gen for a few reason, i wanted something that looks a little newer, is automatic and that it has 4 doors. I hate having to push a seat forward to get into cars, plus every time I go out with friends I drive. I like driving stick and all, but when I have to make a sharp U-turn on a steep portion of a trail I always hold my breath for that split second when it starts rolling downhill and I have to jump from the brake to the gas, plus I'm not a huge fan of a stick shift SUV.

I know the 2nd gens came with the 22re's and the 3.0Ls, but are there any automatic 22re's in 2nd gen 4runners? I'm having no luck finding any 2nd gen 4runners with 22res. If I don't find any I can always just pick up a 3.0L, a little extra power never hurt anyone (well except gas mileage, but it's not that important since it's not my daily driver). My current 4runner gets 22mpg, what could I expect with a 3L auto?

What would you do? Any input is much appreciated.

the 22re is a rare find in the 2nd gen...i've seen 'em, but only with 5 speeds. someone else might know if they ever came with an auto but i dont think they did. if i had my choice, i'd go with the 22re/5-speed set up any day over the 3vze/auto set up, and that's coming from a guy who's made the switch to enjoying wheeling an auto.

did a little looking...according to 4x4wire.com the a340f (4 speed auto) came behind the 22re and 22rte on vehicles with manual hubs...don't know if this includes 4runners...here's the link: http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/parts/

look about 1/3 the way down the page in the transmission chart. hope this helps.

if your going to do it, go for a 96 3rd gen. That 3.0 motor in the second gen is an old dog. One that you take out back behind the shed, and shoot.

I would say stick w/the 1st gen. They are bullet proof and they have that cool option of removing the top. No other Runner has it and I doubt will have it again. That was 1 of my main reasons for getting the one I got. If you want 4 doors, get a sedan.
