Toyota 8" 3rd member with 4.88 gears - $150

this isn't mine...just saw it on craigslist this afternoon. I remember when I was looking for a 4.88 3rd member...they're not as common to find so this may be useful to someone! good luck!

send him an email! (re: 4.88 8" diff on craigslist)

hey djlarroc- why don't you send the seller an email or call him, you've got nothing to lose, he may ship it if you pay him w/ paypal!
I've often bought things off craigslist at a distance, some people aren't willing to ship, others might take some convincing, but you've got nothing to lose! good luck!

uh...help me decide....

I don't need to regear yet (have 4.56's and only 31's) but my next set of tires will be 33's. And my sister and husband live in Tacoma who could pick it up from the guy and hang on to it until I head up there.

just curious (as a back up plan) what do third members sell for from the junk yard? $100?

Thanks

Ya, I thought about that, but man, that would probably be expensive to ship.

Why is that? and if someone has 4.10's (me) how do you go to a 4.88?

Its only the factory 4.88 REAR third. You cannot regear it.

I got my 4.88's for 175 a diff.

So, to understand you guys, when you have a factory 4.88 rear, you can't just pull out the gears and do say a 5.29? You have to swap out the whole diff? But, since I have factory 4.10's, I can do 4.88's? I don't get it.

The factory 4.88 option came with an odd ball offset pinion third. It cannot be regeared. All the other ratios can. However, 4.88's are pretty good for a lot of trucks so they could still be very useful and easy to sell later.

So, how is that done? You can pull the gears out of the stock third and install them in the third that held the 4.10s? Sorry to keep asking dude, I'm trying to understand. Maybe I just need to run a search and read til I get it. How does your truck run w/the 4.88s & 31" tires? Is it too torquey? I see you got the 6 banger as well.

...put it this way. you can regear any oem 8" diff, as long as it isnt the factory 4.88 diff which some runners came with (31's and autobox). this diff is is not the same as the other 8" flavours. i think bearings and other bits in the carrier/side bearings are different.

However, if it is a factory 4.88 its actually stronger than the standard diff equipped with after market 4.88 gears.

This is because the pinion gear in the factory 4.88 diff is larger than the after market pinion so it has more teeth mesh with the ring gear at any given time.

Thus the different pinion offset than the standard diff and the reason why aftermarket gears don't work for the factory 4.88 diff.

Are you saying you can tell one from the other? If you divide the # ring teeth by the # of pinion gear teeth it will equal the ratio (4.88 or 4.10).
