Custom manifold exhaust pipe?

Has anyone made a custom pipe from the manifold to eliminate the crossover pipe? By using a mating flange and custom bent exhaust tube so it exits under the passenger side as a dual exhaust? Would this help fuel economy and power?

The exhaust restriction with the crossover pipe seems like it would hurt performance a lot, and for the life of me I can not figure out when in the hell they made it this way. Seem like a factory power robbing setup to me, not to mention extra heat build up.

The replacement headers are way too expensive, this is why I'm asking what the outcome of this fix would be, good or bad?
