Ok, I told a friend of mine not to take her 86 yota to a mechanic to rip her off on a tune up. I told her I'd do it but I need to make a list of parts she will need/want to replace. So Far, I've got,

Oil, oil filter, plugs and wires, air filter, distributor cap,

can you guys tell me any other items I should replace for her? I'm sure theres more to be done, but I'd like your opinions.

 

might as well add in a rotor to go with that distributor cap. i would also throw in some fuel injector cleaner

 

pcv valve, maybe 02 sensor?

 

please do mine, i have NO tools anymore and have to take mine to get ripped off.

well, maybe not. they will CHECK everything for me for free, replacing is the rip lol.

how much would you estimate labor for spark plugs alone?

 

would probably be cheaper to buy tools and do it yourself.

i actully picked up a decent set of tools at big lots for $30

i wish someone lived near me, or could help me do all this stuff. im new to car engines and such too. im not that stupid, i can figure things out, but spark plugs, and re-gearing, and fixing i need help! i wanna be a freaking intern lol im 18 and i work a part time job and freaking go to college full load.

 

drive your truck out to New Mexico and i'll do yours too. I just bought a new set of nice six sided sockets 10mm-18mm and a set of wrenches 18 or 20mm to 7mm. a quarter inch drive, conversion to 3/8s drive, 2 extensions, and a pair of needle nose pliers from sears for only 100 bucks. All made in the USA, I can't complain with that. That will easily take care of most maintenance issues on my 4runner and pickup.

 

i'm pretty sure you can also rent tools from checkers if you don't want to buy them. also craigslist is a great source for cheap tools. it definitely pays to keep a small set of tools in your truck if you can.

also infiltrator the haynes manual is your friend. if you have time, browse through it. it will familiarize you with your 4runner in no time. and the fsm too (http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...fsm/index.html)

 

thanks man, im looking at that now (its been a half hour lol) and i like what i see, but they make it look soo easy. like im reading on how to change spark plugs. i see that i have to take off those wires, but i dont know where on the truck that is located lol.

 

Belts, cooling system, brakes, fluids, etc.

Check the FSM or manual for a suggested maintenance list.
