can i use 85w140 gear oil?
#1
Well, i scored 5 gallons of 85w140 gear oil from work, and i was wondering if i could use it in my transmission and transfer case. I just bought the truck 7 months ago and want to change them, the truck has 116000 miles on it and i doubt that they have been changed. Would there be any drawbacks from using this oil, i live in SC, so the weather remains fair, no extreme hot or cold. Thanks in advance
The truck is a 1988 with the 3.0, 5 speed Thanks in Advance

GL-5 grade I assume? If so, would be fine in the axles and if your t-case takes gear oil, it'll work there as well. A little on the thick side, but it'll work fine, I've used that weight and now a 75W250 in my axles. In the tranny, a GL-4 oil would work better, but GL-5 won't hurt it. You shifting may be sluggish when cold:
