R150 Tranny rebuild kit need advice

Hey all,
I'm looking to rebuild my tranny as it was making some weird noises. I found a guy on ebay who sells the complete rebuild kits and asked him if he stocks them for my truck 1993 p/u 4x4 3.0 w/ a 5spd and he quoted me $234.99 w/out synchro rings and $285.99 with the rings (+ shipping and handling). Idk if i should get the rings, i don't think it needs them but if i'm gonna be in there, might as well do it right?
What do you guys think? Is this a fair price? Should i get the rings? Thanks ahead of time.

Do you want the downtime while you're fixing the trans? Do you have a nice set of trans rebuild tools? I bet you could get two good used transmissions from a junkyard for that money.

i was thinking about rebuilding an extra one just to do it and have one, same with the transfer case. i found an in depth article for the rf1a transfer case, but i have not looked for the transmission. i do have the FSM, so that should help. what special tools are you having to order?

I wasn't ordering special tools, my dad is a millwright and i was going to have him do the pressing or anything to do with special tools. I am going to check around tomorrow to see what a used tranny would cost. I like the idea of rebuilding my own because then i know what its been through and that it is fresh, but i don't like the downtime or the work. I have the engine out for a rebuild now but it will be back in this weekend and i'm getting antsy and want this done. Thanks for all suggestions.

Called some local salvage yards to get prices on a used tranny for my truck. They are listed in the order i called : $400, $525 (w/ a core ), $475, $300, $300, $425, $550 and i am still waiting on a call from another yard.
Anybody got one in Wisconsin that wants to get rid of it for cheaper?

IMHO - unknown bearing quality.

If it were my $$ Id go with a Marlin kit.

AFAIK it appears that the R150 trans is cheaper than a W56 used to be (before I got spares for cheap) I recall $500 for a W56 circa 1994
