I have an 86 4runner and I am trying to replace/check the front wheel bearing. It is a 4wd and I am stuck at the tapered washers that hold on the part that switches it from 2wd to 4wd. HOW DO YOU REMOVE THIS THING?

 

cone washers? penetrating oil (pb blaster) and a couple good blows with a hammer

 

back the nut back to the edge of the threads and get a punch or a big nail. put your punch on the center of the bolt and hit it a few times, easy. then take the nut off, and get a pair of pliers and twist the cone washer out, if it does not want to come out put nut back and hit it a few more times. the nut being on keeps the nut from expanding. when you go to put the cone washers back on coat them with anti-seize.

 

I give the stud a firm rap with a brass drift. I have the best luck with working my way around the hub - don't just sit and wail on one of them. If you're having real trouble, sometimes a few whacks on the side of the hub will help, but that's kinda a last resort - you don't want to damage the hub!

Once you get one to pop loose, the rest come pretty easy.

PB is a good idea. Hitting the studs or the hubs directly with a hammer is a bad idea.

Do not use a punch as it will damage the studs (they are not bolts). Use something brass as it is soft and will take the blow and transfer it to the studs without damaging them.

Yes. Use the brass drift to transfer the blow from the hammer to the stud of the manual hub as the brass is softer and will not damage the studs or hub. Removing cone washers is more finesse than gorilla force...and the former leaves your studs and hub in much better shape. I've seen what ignorant gorillas do to hubs as I've purchased quite a few used sets and you can easily tell who knew how to get cone washers off and who did not.

There is a much easier way than hammering on the studs... I made a tool from a 3/32" punch (a 1/8 punch should work too) file the tip of it so the edge looks like a chisel. Spray a bit of penetrating oil in the gap of the cone washer and let sit for a few minutes. Then take your modified punch and put the end in the gap of the cone washer. Give it a couple of taps with a hammer and the cone washer will pop out from the expansion by the punch.

I tried hammering the studs before and I could not get the cone washers to come off. The modified punch works so well that I can get the washers off with 1 or 2 smart taps with a hammer. Try it, you'll like it!

 

x1000 on using a brass drift before you go to town on the studs. They could really get messed up otherwise.

I lightly tap the hub all around and it wiggles them all out..

 

I use the hub tapping method some, but I get a small screw driver, put it into the crack in the cone washer, then wack it with a hammer until it sinks enough to touch the hub itself. If that hasn't loosened it enough, I move on to a bigger screwdriver.
