Well my Tranny issues persist. I posted a couple of weeks ago about my Radiator/Tranny-Cooler lines bursting and all of my engine coolant rushing into my tranny/tranny pan. After replacing the Radiator and completely draining and flushing the tranny (used 28 qts to completely flush and refill), the Tranny continues to behave funny:

- While stopped at a light (on level pavement), if I let off of the brake, it will not roll fwd like it used to. It will sit in place until I actually press the gas.
- 1st to 2nd shifting is rough, and I can audibly hear a metallic clunk during the shift.
- Shifting into reverse is delayed about 2 seconds and then is violent and loud when it finally does shift.

Any diagnosis based on description? The 4runner has 108K miles and is a 99% hwy vehicle. It only sees 4WD during snow storms and 1 or 2 camping trips a year.

Am I looking at a new Tranny?

 

Did you drop the pan and replace the filter ???

It sounds like the clutch packs are messed up....or stall converter...im not great with autos.

Yes, dropped the pan, replaced the filter and used the tranny pump to flush the entire system. As I said, it took 28 qts to completely flush everything until the flluid had no more "strawberry milkshake" left from the coolant being mixed with it.

Is there a replacement time frame for tranny lines? I thought they were
good for the life of the car? Anyone know?

 

It's not the line itself that burst... it's the tranny fluid cooling coil inside the radiator that developed a leak, and allowed coolant under pressure to get pushed into his tranny.

 

another reason to go external tranny oil cooler...which i think I will do sooner then later now

 

X2, I'm by-passing mine right now.





The only thing that worrries me is in cold weather maybe over cooling the ATF. The stock radiator cooler can only cool down to the coolant temp.

If you get the hayden ones they have built in thermostat which opens around 90deg

 

So should we be worried about the integrity of our radiators as we near 100k miles?

I posted this question in https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/transmission-cooler-install-question-117836/ and I guess this issue is split down the middle. I bypassed mine on my car, and will do it on the 4Runner as long as it doesn't need the crappy one in the radiator.

Ebbsnflows' problem (and a few others with the same issue ive seen on different forums) has given me no faith in the OEM tranny cooler as I have 103k miles.

 

I am at 200k miles + (270k km) so i think its either RARE or im just lucky!

 

Ok...back to the topic for a moment....Anyone have to replace their Tranny or have it rebuilt? What did you pay? Just trying to get an idea of how much vaseline I'm going to need.

Search for the user Lee, I remember his tranny grenaded itself earlier this spring and he had to buy a new transmission.....i vaguely remember the price of the tranny is 1500 and probably 1000 to have someone put it in, so a total of about $2500

 

You should ask John how much he would charge...i dont know how close you are and the added shipping rates, but the higher cost you pay will at least get you a durable tranny, John knows his stuff.

 

My overhaul was $2400. $900 was parts which included about $600 in hard parts which you should not require and $160 for the torque converter which you may or may not require. The labor charges were also extended due to the amount of cleanup that had to be done due to the debris from the broken gears. The book time for R&R and 'clean' overhaul is about 12 hours IIRC so your cost will vary greatly depending on the shop rate. An OEM torque converter lists for almost $800 but can be had for $600. That's a big jump from the $160 reconditioned on. BUT, I'm still having lock-up problems with mine.

I would guess that you could have it pulled, all frictions replaced and a recon torque converter installed for ~$300 plus 12 hours. (1200-780 : $100 - $65 / hr)

A dealer supplied rebuilt is ~$2200.
A used unit can be had for $700-$1000 depending on your local supply.
While all Tundra. Tacoma, and 4runners share the same basic unit, there are some differences which it seems no one can itemize. The public knowledge base of interchangeability seems fairly shallow. Failures are rare and reserved for us special few.

 

When my J30 tranny went out, I found one on Ebay for around $800 refurbished, and then $600 to install. That might be a cheaper route to take. The ebay refurbs generally have 12month/12000 mile warranties.

 

Holy cow. I had no idea, that this was an actual issue. Maybe I should bypass my stock cooler as well.

Back on topic, I say give IPT a call. They seem to know their stuff.
