Radio Shack PRO-82 Handheld Scanner

Just wondering if anyone would be interested. I bought this scanner a couple of years ago but hardly ever used it beacuse I moved up to a better model soon after. It's pretty much in brand new condition, I still have the box and all manuals.

Here is a link to it on the Radio Shack website:
Radio Shack PRO-82

I'm thinking $65 obo plus shipping. I'll post some pics very soon.

Well, listening to the police depends on how advanced the departments are in your area. Some departments "trunk" their radio transmissions, which a technical term for switching between frequencies every transmission, this scanner doesn’t have trunking capability. On the other hand it works very well for listening to fire departments, paramedics, truckers, Nascar teams, and planes. Another useful feature is that you can listen to 24 hour weather conditions, which is comes in handy when camping or whatnot. Over all this is a really nice entry level scanner, great for the beginner.

It would be cool if there could be some kind of CB radio that was handheld like that.

Well you can listen to CB frequencies with a scanner but you can't talk into it. I think there might be hand held CB radios out there though?

There are dozens of them, but generally the range leaves something to be desired.

Have any specific questions? I found the instruction manual to be pretty helpful if you haven't looked at it yet. Here's a cool website to check out too, http://www.radioreference.com/

Here is one of the frequencies from your area:

Carmel, City of
Police

Frequency---License---Type---Tone---Description---Mode
154.71000---KMA766---RM---179.9 PL--Dispatch----FM

The frequency is what you’ll end up programming into the scanner. The “Storing Know Frequencies Into Channels” on page 24 will get you started. To keep everything organized I would either declare each bank for a different city or area, or declare each bank for a specific type of department, i.e. bank one is police, bank two is fire…

To find some more frequencies go to http://www.radioreference.com/, then on the left, under Radio Features click on RR Database. Then pick the state and then the county. I also have a more comprehensive database that I can check out too, which probably has a better section for your area.

Thanks for the help. I have found some frequencies online, but I think I'll talk with a local fire dept buddy to get the good ones. I also heard the longer antenna is the bomb. I might have to try it out. I'd like to have an outlet accessory to plug it in. I will take it into radioshack for those accessories. Thanks for the tip. I'll print some frequencies out and try them out later!

My office is asking me where my scanner is because the fire siren at the fire house went off twice. And with the recent Tahoe fire scare, it's good to know whats going on.

Agreed, it always fun to hear what’s going on in the community firsthand, before the news stations get to it. Could even be a life saver too. An antenna upgrade will improve reception a good deal but I'd suggest not buying the RadioShack Center-Loaded Telescoping Whip Antenna. I bought one and it broke shortly thereafter, so I returned it, its cheaply made.

Just wanted to say thanks for the link to the Frequencies!

I'm moving to Cincinnati soon so I'll definitely be able to use the site!
