I changed my oil the other week and I found many many small to medium metal shavings in the drain pan. It really upset me, as this truck was my first vehicle and i was and am having many good times with it! Whatever happens I will not get rid of it though!! I think this is kind of ironic though that this happens when I get my second car. (99 camry: 77k miles, 4cyl, auto, new white paint!! all for free!!! my grandparents gave me it!)

Is there anything I should do?? You know to make it last a little bit longer!? I mean now I am just using it to go through the mud, drive around town every once and a while, pulling out freinds, and driving about 60 miles to the beach.

I am going to the beach in about 2 weeks, do you all think it would be okay to take it? Its going to be a long ride though, cause I took the CD player out of it to put in my camry. I just like driving through the washouts and stuff, and getting paid to pull people out!!

I know there is an on-going problem with the engine, since i bought it, burning oil, cause i cant drive over 65 or it burns it like crazy...but I always keep oil with me and it has never stopped me from driving to dallas when we had to evacuate for the hurricane, drive to the beach maybe 15-20 times in 2 years, etc,

I just want some opinions!

 

not sure but i how you feel i changed my fuel filter and it had metal shavings in it

*edit* maybe running it to low on oil and causing to much friction and causing wear

 

Its a bad feeling isnt it, I seriously almost cried, but my best friend talked me out of it. I dont know why I am so attached to this truck, maybe its the fact that we both have the same birthday 2-89!! But I always have fun in this truck!!

I was thinking about that but I dont know, I mean it was the first time I had ever changed the oil myself!! I always took it to lube shops cause dad paid for it!!

 

add some marvel mystery oil to it, and drive it 'easy'. until you can afford a rebuild or a swap. i rebuilt a 22r and one of the bearings was gone! block needed machining...(read:lots of money) i should have swapped in a small block, but the truck just wasn't worth it...

 

yeah, Im going to drive it easy to the beach, but after that: BALLS TO THE WALL!! I wonder if I should just put another 22re in there or something different (has to be toyota though....WILL NOT TO CROSSBREEDING, I will save that for the V8 miata I am going to build ) I was conteplating(spelling) doing a 1uz swap, but thats a lot of fabricating, and a new trans and everything. I think I might stick with the 22re and maybe stroke it or something.

 

As I said before, I have another car to drive but my truck is my baby!!! I am also going to leave for college in about 4 weeks, so it will be sitting in the garage for about 1 1/2 years, but after that, I will start building it up!

 

just pulled the motor out of my 87 4runner and had metal shavings in the oil pan...turns out i had a spun bearing so thats something that you might be on the way to doing.

 

i won't say anything about the miata, but, why not get something usefull? i understand there is a huge following of the 22r, it's a terrificly designed engine, but your limited on output. sure, drop $3k on one to make 200 lbft or...

save and put an LS2 in it and paint toyota on the valvecovers. i measured a '91 p/u. it'll fit.

actually, i've heard of some pretty potent 22r's, though i've never seen one. (without the turbo)

 

just curious how much oil is it burning? your going to have to replace or rebuild the motor sooner or later so start saving for it now. i would recommend using your car for your beach trip, you probably make it there and back but its not a good idea. i was in a simmilar situation with my truck burning oil and i went on a trip of about 150 miles round trip and when i got back it burned 5 quarts of oil over 3 days and almost left me stranded somewhere i shouldnt of been in the first place.
drive it and have fun doing it till it dies and just try to avoid places that if it died could cause big problems.

 

you could get an oil analysis done for about $22.

 

If the shavings are ALUMINUM and not STEEL (test with a magnet) and its a 22RE (4cly) then the timing chain has busted the plastic guides apart and is starting to gut through the timing chain cover into the water passage.

Time to get a new timing chain.

"cheap" way to check is to pull the valve cover off and look down the front cover...

IMHO the budget way to fix this is to leave the head attached and to pull the TC cover w/o dropping the pan. Use FIPG and it should leak (at least not much)
