Just wondering if there is a difference between 4 Cylinder and V6 4x4 pickup brake calipers and how to tell the difference. The reason I am asking is because I need to replace the drivers side and the local scrap yard is not sure what model it came off of. I can?t remove mine because it is the only thing I have to drive right now.

There is definitely a difference between them; the V6 calipers are much larger/more robust and they are NOT interchangeable. Which vehicle do you have? MarlinCrawler & WabFab have very nice remanufactured ones WITH pads for $119.

 

V6 are 2 large pistons (2" if measured on the tire side of the caliper) and 4cyl has 1 large (2") and 1 small pistons (1.75" measured from the tire side of the caliper)... I just went and measured for you as I have both.... So if you pull your tire you'll see either 2 of the same sized pistons or 2 different sized pistons..... Hope this helps...

 

Actually, the V6 has FOUR pistons...two on each side.

 

V6 IFS calipers have a larger body with the "fins" on the outside and have (4) large pistons

4 banger calipers have a smaller body and have (4) pistons - (2) large and (2) small

They both will work on the same vented rotor and most of the parts are interchangeable.

I have the V6 IFS up front on my 85 and the 4banger IFS on the rear, both on LC SFA vented rotors, thus most of my brake parts are interchangeable and I only need one spare.

Thanks for the info everyone. It was a big help, going to a scrap yard to get a used one for 25 bucks. I just need to get it stoping then i will worry about new V6 Calipers as an upgrade. Money is kind of tight
