Front wheel drive without rear driveshaft??

I have been dealing with a vibration in the rear of my 95 4runner for a while now. Today I took the rear driveshaft off to help diagnose the vibration. Much to my suprise the truck will not move. I engaged the hubs, and have no movement at the front driveshaft. If I unlock the hubs the front driveshaft spins.

I have a V6 with auto trans.....whats the deal??

It should work. Has 4WD ever been used? Might want to check the A/T t-case shift linkage to see if it is moving OK:

And if the truck is ADD-equipped, check out the system:

The 4 wheel drive has been working fine...I used it a couple weeks ago. I also manually shifted the linkage to be sure.

The ADD has been gone for a year..since the SAS

Like I said before, when the hubs are unlocked the driveshaft spins at the same speed as the rear flange.

I am just wondering if the tranfercase has some sort of load sensing clutch or limited slip.

so your saying that if you unlock the hubs, shift it in gear, and look underneeth you see the front driveshaft turning?

The A340H is a hydrolicly shifted transfer case. Check your fulid levels, theres a seperate check and drain plug on the rear.

your gonna have a hard time finding just the rear transfercase for a A340H as they are kinda one piece. (not the best pic but you get the idea)

I hope it is because it is low on fluid. Makes sense though...most of the time when I use the 4wd the truck is warmed up, and when I tried it without the rear driveshaft it had been sitting all day.

I need the $5.00 fix as now I get to have some driveshaft expenses.

I changed the fluid in my T-case and topped off to the proper level, and trans fluid is good. The drain plug magnet was clean. I also checked the linkage. Tried it again today and was able to move slowly in drive/4 hi, but the engine was revving and there was no torque from the front wheels. In reverse or 4lo it would not move.

I then replaced the rear driveshaft and the truck sure acted like it was in 4wd??

I am at a loss.

There is a way now to put a gear driven transfer case or 2 behind the A340H, but it requires an adapter and some mods. Look here if you're interested:

Get a gear drive with Marlin's 4.7:1 and that adaptor plate.

The output location shouldn't change much. Maybe 6" back? Unless your driveshaft is bottoming out already, that should work....right?

I took the hubs apart, and found a ton of grease in there. I cleaned them all up and now things are working fine. I will test it on Sunday.

Sounds like a hub problem.

I had the same problem with my cruiser, turned out to be a bad hub, no noise either, it was weird.

maybe a bad front diff, of axle? Broken Birfield?
