What is this top end noise?

My truck makes a lot of top-end noise, especially if I get over 3k RPM. Lower RPM there's none of this noise even when the engine is grunting up a hill. To me it sounds like cam lobes slapping on the lifters. Does this sound like ping or is it cam noise like I think it is.

My timing is dead on 10*, idle is 800. Everything sounds really good until I get the RPMs up high. Good power, normal fuel economy.

Timing belt is a couple of years old and I only put a handful of miles on the truck as I use it for snow plowing and work around the house.

What might this be?

Thanks,
-john

The 3.0 is notorious for having noisy injectors.

Huh! I would not have suspected noisy injectors on a gasser. On my PowerStroke yes, but not my Yota. So is it just something that gets noisier with age? Does getting the injectors rebuilt/cleaned help?

cleaning them does not help. just get used to the diesel sound of it. it sure does get annoying though on the interstate. just invest in a good sound system

The 3.0 is a noisy engine to begin with. Take a look at your steering shaft seal. It is fairly common for that thing to wear out and disintegrate. When it does, it will let all that engine noise into the cab. Here is a pic of what it should look like.

Or get a loud muffler. No emissions tests were I'm at so I ditched my muffler. Killer sound, everyone I know who bought after-market units says mine sounds better.
