95 4runner update time to throw in the towel?
Hello all,
I posted some time back about a 40 lb # 6 cylinder on a 95 v6. My mechanic was convinced the motor was shot with such low pressure and stopped there. It runs but has a rough idle(getting worse). Not wanting to give up I changed plugs, wires, cap and rotor. The cap was well worn. The seafoamed it. Still runs like crap. Are 6 ans 3 linked? It pinged alot maybe its shot. The deal is I'm short on cash and wanna just swap it for a newer one(if I can find one).
I've seen the engines on here and others and I figured with the tires, cv boots and power steering vacumn sensor I'm looking at almost 5 grand with the new motor. Plus I need a windshield and key. And the tranny hesitated when cold to go into drive. After I put in in 4wd it was fine. Should I give up or fix it or trade it?

Your compression problem is more than likely a blown head gasket. It is very common on the 3VZE engine. It doesn't have to be the end of the truck. A lot of people on this forum have gone through this ordeal. Including myself. I did the repair myself at a cost of about 300 bucks.

a BHG isn't such a bad thing, really. it's always blown out of proportion. (no pun intended)
as long as the vehicle wasn't run like that for too long, and water didn't get into the oil and starve the bearings of lubrication, i'd replace the HG's and go. (may as well do both if you're in there)

Thanks again. I met a guy yesterday with a 91 v6 for $2000. It looks good but I haven't driven it. I t looks like I'm gonna fix the '95 and buy the '91. The $4000 I was gonna put down on new vehicle should cover it. Wife won't like it but oh well.

It's ironic that I found this thread. I currently have a '94 4-Runner sitting in my driveway. I was wanting to buy it, but it a really bad miss at idle. My friend at the dealership let me have it for the weekend to check whatever I want. I found that the #3 cylinder has only 30psi of compression. The others check at about 168psi. The plug on that cylinder is a little dark with no evidence of water or oil on it. The crankcase oil looks good too. Evidently I have a bad or burnt valve. What do you guys think? I can buy it as it sits for $2k, but I'm not sure about the engine problem. This thing looks great and drives even better. Has all the power options and sunroof. I hate to pass it up. What would you do?
I forgot to mention. It is a V6 that has apparently been rebuilt at some point. The odometer has 235k on it.
