I am working on a '94 4Runner where the rear window will not roll up or down, the rear wiper will not work and I can't even unlock and open the rear gate. Because the rear wiper "park" sensor is often the culprit, can someone tell me how to temporarily bypass the sensor to eliminate this before ripping into the relay box? Where are the wires located? (This 4Runner is not mine, so it's not in my driveway at the moment.)

Yes, I did.

 

at the risk of sounding too simple did you check the fuse?

 

In the back cargo area there is a small storage space with a door on it. If you remove the storage space you will find a circuit board with some relays attached to it (attached to the circuit board not the storage space). What the board does is control voltage going to back window, back door lock, wiper motor, rear window defogger and wiper fluid pump.

That circuit board uses whats called "relay logic" - for example, if the board senses the back window is down, none of the other functions will work.

I had a similar prob on my 95 (rear wiper wouldn't work) turns out there was corrosion on the wiring harness plugs going to the circuit board preventing a good electrical connection. (how the corrosion got there I don't know - the connectors were copper)

I just eliminated the plug altogether by soldering the wires direct to each other. Problem solved.

Just unplug the connectors and look for corrosion or broken prongs.

 

Back storage area on driver's side.

 

I have checked the fuses and confirmed that the rear window will go and up and down if I put power directly to it. I have the control box out of the rear (found 6 relays inside) and the soldered joints look good, the box looks brand new inside and out, no corrosion.

Is there a certain relay that should be looking at first?

 

Window lock button? The center console one OR the armrest one will do it, and make you feel like a dumbarse when you find that is the problem, ask me how I know.

Does anyone know where to find the wiper sensor switch? I assume it is somehow built into the wiper motor.

 

Unplug the wiper to take it out as a variable.
The problem i had, was teh wiper toggle switch was in teh on position i hate dealing with the rear window.

 

Here we are, month #3 and the 4Runner still hasn't fixed itself.

I replaced the relay module with another one and the rear window/wiper/gate still does not work. How do I bypass the rear wiper "parked" sensor? Where is it located?

 

i had a problem like this and went about it the most tedious way possible. first off, start by hitting the windown up/down button and see if you hear the relays clicking. if they are then one of the sensors is stopping something. mine ended up being the rear wiper circuit. i believe my wiper hadn't retracted all the way which told the circuit that the window couldn't be put down.

 

oh and i believe the wiper parked sensor is in the roof by the rear light. basically where the motor. you'll end up taking most of the plastic panels off to get to it. also you might check on the rear driver side corner. that's where the relays are which might also be where that sensor is.

 

the upper centre panel in the cargo area covers the wiper motor ass'y, be careful removing it as the clips etc are easily broken. once you remove the cover, you can inspect the inards. try applying power directly to the wiper motor to cycle it, once it has cycled, it may line up properly.
