3rd Gen speedo gears (transmission)

I am considering getting some larger tires, so in order to do that i want a speedometer that works. I know i can change the differential gears, and the speedometer gear.

I am considering the speedometer gear for cost. Instead of changing the front and back diffs, just the one in the transmission.

Searching here doesn't really help much for this, but i found this on google http://www.automedia.com/Changing/Yo...es20020501sg/1

Is this reasonable to do at my house with limited tools. Is it the same on the site i posted as it would be for my 4runner? I kind of remember reading that i might need to change a gear in the transfer case instead of the transmisson.

If anyone knows of a better way to correct my speedometer and odometer just let me know if im overcomplicating this. I can't find anything about how to directly do this

Look at Schaefer"s write-up here for an alternative: http://www.sonoransteel.com/speedo.html

I see he says it would work with a 99 4runner. Is the speedo electric in a 96 4runner also? or is that another one of the changes made in 99?

I think you can use the Superlift calibrator or the JET Accu-Speed. Summit and Jegs as well as Performance Products list them for your year. I've never heard of anyone running them. If you go that route let us know.

My info will not work with this persons truck. My 2.7 4Runner and a Tacoma are the same. The SR5 or Limited 4Runners are not.

The info will not apply.

Ok. Do you know if that is because mine isn't electronic? Would a different computer maybe work? Or am i screwed into using a different method my changing gears in the tranny.

(thanks for the heads up btw, if i had the money in hand for the tires i would have bought that already, you saved me $80)

I will do some research on these products. So far the Jet product is in the lead because of cost. If I do go this route I will make sure to let everyone know how it works out. truckperformance.com listed it for my make and model, so im assuming I still have an electronic speedometer.

Someone please let me know if i don't.

Yes,
Our speedos are electronic, I don't know where they pull their signal from. The JET says it can adjust shift points for the AT's. That would be interesting to play with.

The SR5 with the 3.4 gets it's signal through the ABS sensors. There is a wire you can tap in the passenger side kick panel since you don't have a sender in the back of the t-case like my 2.7 and the Tacoma.

Just get a GPS, see how much its off, and go from there.

When my speedo says 70mph, Im really going 80mph.

When it says Im going 25mph, im going 30mph...

Im just used it it I guess.

Unless you are going to 35" tires like me, you wont see THAT much of a difference.

Yeah, im not too worried about the speedometer really. Its more of the odomoeter that i want to work right, because if its 7.9% off (and thats what i have calculated it would be with 285/75R16's) then after 10k miles its 790 off, and after 100k miles its 7900 off. Doesn't seem like a lot to most people, but too much for me.

Thanks Steve for the info. I suspected that's where it got it from...makes sense, but I didn't want to hand out bad information.
