I'm making my cover top mounting bolts double as tie-downs. They are 8-mm bolts so they can be heavy-duty, but I'm only using them for light use (i.e., holding things like water storage, etc, in place and upright).
Potential tie-down points: IN REAR DECK, 3 PER SIDE.
Of course, being the minimalist, I already disposed of the garnish/trim for $20... more than enough to buy my d-rings

I did a quick search on eBay - "cargo D rings" - and there are hundreds....

K found ones with just the correct dims for my needs. Just need to enlarge holes for 8mm bolts....
Outer dim 1.25", bolt clearance 0.25", wite thickness 0.125"
I never used any that small i like the weld on style .
Then I secure way more weight.
As long as the weight is not all that much it should be fine .
Anything heavier the shock if you venture off road or have pot holes like in this area might after time crack the fiberglass where the bolts go through
Rails and T bolts will give you lots of mounting options. Since you are creating custom trim panels these could be these could be ideal. If they are attached to the body just below and above the cover panels you have endless adjustment for moderate sized stress loading, can use them with the top off or on.
I can see Wyoming's point about stress, you can use a sleeve here to alleviate this (similar to chef's roof rack, iirc he used a sleeve and rubber washers). This would put the load primary on the bedside steel, but might still have lots of potential movement depending on the hardware sizes used.. You could just bolt the rings to the inner cab on the vertical surfaces similar to the rail suggested locations.
I took these out of the trunk of a Toyota Matrix. Now I just need to figure out the best place to mount them.
