It's a roached out 89 with a perfect frame and 95% good body. There a couple little rust spots and the "don't close the hood I have a wrench there!" dent in the fender. The door panels are a mildew farm but will clean easily. I'm working on a list of interior parts I need today. The truck was listed with a bad motor. I replaced a ground wire and it fired up. The starter is hanging up a little.

The 22re doesn't smoke so I'll change the fluids and run it a bit. The auto trans is low on fluid. Drive is weak but low gear and reverse work well. I may swap in a 5spd I have here.

Tony - awesome, the paint looks shiny. Door panels are in great shape, minus the mildew. I have a bit of gray hard top trim that you can have. One side is cracked but it's all there.

Looks pretty good. And a plus is you got the 22R-E not the 3.0. Much easier to work on. Pls keep us posted.

 

Since I thinking about getting a Runner your comment made me wonder - what is the horsepower difference between a 3.0 and a 22RE (both stock)?

 

I know the 3.0 is 150hp stock, not sure about the 22re

 

I've decided to keep my new motor 20r/22r, well new. So I'm going to go thru this 22re with a fine tooth comb starting with firing up Pandora and listening to Breaking Benjamin channel.

I have never ever been a fan of a computer controlled vehicle. My old 86 4Runner had the 22re in it and at about the 400k mark, I pulled all the garbage off, changed the intake, added a fuel pump eccentric and threw a Weber on it. I never noticed a decrease in horsepower as these are not hp giants, so I was happy with the transition. Since then, we have put another 500k + miles on it with no major mechanical issues. I used synthetic fluids in it since Texaco line of Havoline synthetics came out around 1990.

So so here I am. Wondering if I keep it stock or decomputerize it. Guess I'll see where it goes. Today I'm going to label all the stuff and begin a tear down. Plans so far are to install dual row tc and go thru the head. I feel bad about putting my 80 on the back burner, so I promised my self I would continue fab and body work at nite. I will be working at my job but from home. So at 49 years old, I'm back to working triple shifts. Wish me luck!

Hey, while you have most of the interior out, go all the way. Take out the carpet and take off the door panels. Then use that brush on sound dampener (or the spray on). I love my runner but man that thing is loud. I told myself I was going to use the sound dampener years ago and never did. I made a list of little stuff to replace like you. Then once I got all the important ones done, I didn't want to tear out everything to use the dampener. So, do it first, you be happy you did.

good plan! I've got a huge supply of dynamat at work but I was researching stuff called lizard skin. It's a spray on. Not sure which way I'll go yet but I will definitely take your advice. Thanks for checkin in.

 

How loud are the interiors of 4Runners?

 

My 86 that i bought new from the dealer was dead quiet. But back then i worked as a detailer for the dealership and here in Florida we used an undercoating. I put it on extra heavy since it was goin to be my truck. Sprayed a ton of it on the bottom of the body and wheel wells. It wasnt until my son completely restored the truck is when it was removed. Not a bit of rust anywhere on it and it was used heavily at the beach and the intercoastal waterways when the tides were low to get to a few secret fishing holes.

 

So it's taken me two days just to somewhat get a toolbox in order. Life has been very busy for me this week. I'm squeezing in some Toyota time along with my kids, grandkids and my wife. Looks like I'm ready to label all this computer controlled and emissions garbage on this truck. I may get halfway thru it and just lose patience and throw it all in a bin and go carb haha. My grandpa isn't here to help anymore but I'm gonna give him props and post a pic of his old sears lower tool box

 

Got the radiator sent out to be cleaned and tested. It's a good ole brass and aluminum radiator so fingers crossed. I went to turn the crank to get TDC and found this!!! I shouldn't be surprised as every spark plug was stripped. Hopefully no damage to the head. No crank bolt?!

 

ooooh, get ready for the "i hat the PO" to start. seems like everthing i do to the runner has me cursing like a sailor at the PO.
