I have a 1990 2nd gen 4runner and it has the 3.slow v6 in it. I am trying to pull a military trailer single axle for camping trips. It came with the pintle hitch which I use on my tahoe. when i try to put the hitch in the receiver on the 4runner- it hits the spare tire swing out mount.
is there a way to convert the spare tire to under the bed as it is common on other trucks.
I searched on google as well as this forum without success.
It should not be very difficult to put the spare tire under the cargo area.
I have seen most 4Runners with the same body style have the spare underneath.
You will need to find the spare tire carrier hoist with the chain as that is what holds the spare tire under the 4runner.
Somebody with a 4runner could probably describe what you need to do much better than I can.
the undercarriage has all the attachments, almost like it was designed for the hoist. I cant believe there isn't a simple fix. it even has a hole and a bumper for the rod to turn the crank.
Just how big a trailer they come in different flavors.
The real question is how much do you need to extend the pintle hook from the back of the receiver??
Make a new mounting piece for the pintle hook extending it out enough to get the clearance you need.
Convert the trailer to a ball type hitch .
Extending the receiver is another good option
I have done all of the above over the years .
I would look at these options before moving the spare underneath just the pain of crawling underneath to check the pressure every few weeks gets so very old as well as lowering and raising the tire to lubricate things
I myself would never go back to a tire under the vehicle .

The pintle is already raised to keep the trailer level, that's why it's hitting the spare tire, I'd hate to modify the hitch itself further.
Converting to a ball trailer isn't an option because the trailer has (working) surge hydraulic brakes and converting would change that. Plus I prefer the pintle.
I appreciate all input. And regardless of why others don't want to put it under the truck.....I do.
What's to convert? Install the tire carrier underneath and be done. Is there something in the way, like exhaust? Or the hitch receiver itself?
Of course, you want to confirm it'll fit first too. My 33" doesn't fit under my gen1. Too big. That's why I want a roof rack, to carry on top. Maybe you need to put spare on top of that trailer. Or on the back of it? Another receiver and hitch mount carrier.
Notice the variation by year :

Outstanding...I didn't know they had anything for this...I was trying to figure out which year model would bolt in.
The truck roof is an option....but the trailer will be pulled by 2 different vehicles and will have my roof top tent and a separate roof rack basket for storage.
I guess I over thought this and was using the term "convert" in my searches.... Not just looking up a replacement part.
Those chain hoist pictured above *should* just bolt up under the 4Runner. Actually the rear swing out tire carrier was only put on a fairly small number of 2nd generation 4Runners. Most had the spare bolted up underneath using the chain hoists just like the pickup trucks from the factory.
That's a cool trailer. Don't modify the trailer or buy a hitch extender. Those trailers are pretty heavy on the tongue and the extensions can add a lot of stress. Absolutely go to a salvage yard and buy a spare tire winch assembly that will fit your model and go that route. A 31-10.50 will go underneath. Not sure about any bigger. If the chain type will bolt up, I do like those better but don't go to the trouble of modifying it to fit. The type shown above for the second gen trucks will work fine. Also, there are a lot of folks out there who would love to buy your rear tire carrier since they are pretty rare. You might consider selling it if you don't decide to use it for something else.
