So after driving the 4Runner the last few days found the rear windows would go down with the driver's window switch but no go up..had to open the doors and use the rear door switch, pain in the but.
Fortunately I have the complete interior from the free shell a friend gave me.
Luckily you don't have to pull the entire door panel to swap the door window switches, they just pop out


Cleaned out the replacement and put it into the panel, 10 minutes later I have 4 working windows

I wish I had taken a before picture of the interior, not perfect but at least it doesn't look like a homeless camp any more

 

Had similar problem. At the time I had the donor sitting in the garage. Unfortunately before I checked the switch I checked many other things. Lol

 

I know you're working now for free, but FYI, the entire driver's window switch assembly is also available from Amazon, on prime no less, for like $30. Just some future knowledge!

Haha...that has happened to me several times. I got lucky this time.
I think the left rear window motor is going out so will have to do more work next time.
That is a great deal. I looked in eBay and guys wanted anywhere from $40 to 150...that wasn't gonna happen

 

one of the things that bugged me when i decided to take on this project was that the fan had one speed, and no A/C. Pulled the dash parts boxes i had from the 4runner shell i had.
Found a good fan switch with the a/c controls and started to pull apart the dash.
i was very happy () to evidence of a short

the new 4 speed switch is on the left and the one speed on the right, you can see some melting on the right switch

sure enough,the old switch had shorted for some reason in the past..probably the quality stereo install work

Lookin good. That issue of a shorted switch is a very common problem in this gen of Toyota

 

I thought that fan switch looked awfully familiar, except for the melty parts...

Completely get not wanting to leave a project undone, sometimes you just have to or nobody gets fed!

 

I had 1 speed on mine, sourced a new switch, tore my dash apart to replace it.... only to find out it was the relay... which was not $free from the parts pile, but like $80..!

I hate wiring basket cases, at least you're doing the Lord's work cleaning it up.

Where on earth did the goodwill wiring come from..!

That kind of sucks finding out it is a common issue. I may find another to throw in the spares box
Interesting that it hadn't changed much but I guess it couldn't change a whole lot for awhile. Glad your's is still in good shape
Getting cleaned up for a family get together was well worth it both from time with family and great burgers but dad brought the spare dash out to me so I can swap the cracked dash pad for a Crack free dash
Sounds like I dodged a bullet, glad it was sorta a simple fix. Just time consuming.
So after wondering whiskey Tango Foxtrot for awhile about the Goodwill wiring harness, it is part of the stereo wiring. I have another stereo that never made it into the Trekker I may swap in tomorrow when I put this mess back together

 

Looks to me that Toyota could of made it a little easier to access the stereo and heater assembly. Glad to see it was a simple fix. Stereos are the biggest electrical issue in my experience. Always amazed at how well the 2nd gens interiors hold up. Yours looks great. Your seat and door panels still look new.

 

It is in pretty good shape interiorwise other than some wear tears in the driver's seat
I want to try an experiment and pull the lower cushion fabric from a passenger side seat to see if it might work as a replacement. The d/s seat always seem to be torn in the same spot.
If not I still have the lowest mileage Prelude seats from the Trekker I could throw in. Which may happen. The driver's side seat has fallen back on me a couple of times like the mechanism is fubar...

I agree about the stereo access, I kind of wonder if they tried to make it moreasier theft proof. I was going to install another stereo today but the dash plate wasn't even close to working.
Got the dash back together. The donor interior I have was light brown/tan. I used some Dupli-Color interior paint on the dash pad, I am happy with the result.

I went ahead and replaced the blower motor resistor today after doing a little more research and learning it could contribute to killing the fan switch
I'd like to have a talk with the genious at Toyota who decided to put a failure prone point in such a convience place (tucked under the blower unit on the right side tucked up against the firewall)
I went ahead and pulled the glove box hoping for a little more room.

got it out after a few minutes and cussing, not the easiest thing to get out.
if you need to having a 7mm wrench helps on the back screw/bolt, you can get to the visible screw with a screwdriver or nut driver.
new one on the left, old one on the right..old one was slightly tarnished.
new one should offer a few years of good service



i wanted a back up camera on this thing since once I end up with a 35" spare on the back the rear view mirror is gonna be worthless.
I didn't want multiple screens blocking my view. Did a little research and found that Garmin has a GPS compatible camera.
Enter the Garmin BC30 camera. I found one on ebay reasonably priced

Cool thing is that you can add additional cameras. You can find cheaper systems but as mentioned before i didn't want multiple screens
I mounted it up under the lip of the tire mount thinking it would help offer some great protection. I made cut part of the overhang off to add more light

it does a decent job

 

I love the back up camera idea. Gonna have to do that my self. The tire really limits the ability to backup especially on dark nights on the trail. Good Job

 

having to pull the grill in order to change a headlight bulb is another big design flaw on these things.

threw in some Silvania Silver Star Ultras
since i was gonna have to pull it all apart again to get the passenger side bulb ring back in i decided i might as well sand and paint the grill and parking light trim. not perfect but better than faded chrome


might do the bumper some time

Decided to black out the rest of the bumper. Sanded it down with 150 grit and gave it 3-4 coats.
I will do the mirrors aND door handles next week

 

If pulling a lot of trailers, the rear camera will make that worth it alone. I have to get out 50 times to get a trailer connected. Glad you posted a picture of the resistor. They made a big improvement over the previous generation of trucks as it appears to me.
