1985 4runner questions?

I just pick up a 1985 4runner 22REC, I need to put a different engine in it.

What years will fit?
Also are the 22r 22re 22rec the same block and head ??

I will be using it as a daily drive and a personal plow truck. once and a while hit the baby trails.

The head was rebuilt? Or so I was told. I think it was a hack job.

At start up the oil light comes on. Which in my mind says the main or rod bearing are going out?

188000 miles on the unit?

Am I better off putting new rod and main bearing in? or a used engine ?

Any shop up by me in Wisconsin wants way too much to rebuild a short block

you sure the oil light sender is still good? get an aftermarket gauge for the oil pressure. I would hate to see you ditch a perfectly good motor because of a less than $20 sender.

I would love to, but I need it to be able to plow me out and get to a-b, and I don’t want to swap it out in winter. My garage is a joke. The 4runner barely fits.

From: Nashville TN. I can help you if you're close BUT NOBODY CAN HELP YOU IF YOU DON'T FILL YOUR LOCATION IN!
79-84 And 85-95 will not interchange.

The block deck was de-decked in 85. So you cannot and should not interchange the heads.

85-95... Blocks are all the same (Ex Turbo) Semi-flat topped pistons. Have a slight dish.
79-84 blocks are easily ID'd by the high top pistons.

Here's a RE cover on an early 22R block

I pulled each plug wire and found the knock gets quieter when I take # # wire off.

There are many things that can make a 22re sound like it is knocking.
As xxxtreme22r recommended get an aftermarket gauge for the oil pressure.
Doing a compression check also wouldn't hurt.
If the oil and compression is good then use the factory service manual to start testing the efi. There is a link to FSMs in my signature.

Check the compression, had about 100-105 in each cylinder, pulled the engine Saturday morning, cyl # 4 rod bearing was shot.
I picked up a rebuilt engine and trans from a 1987 SR5 4X4 Truck, Toyota rebuilt the engine in 2001 and the trans in 2003. All stock yota parts were used.
The 87 was a carb model

3rd member and gears question and suggestions

3rd member and gears question and suggestions

I have a 1985 4Runner.
Solid axle
22REC

I bought it with 31” new off brand mud tires.

I would like to change the gears.

From what I have read, I should go to a 4.88 ratio? Is this correct?

If so is there any truck or 4runner I can get a full 3rd member out of and use ?

The 4runner will be used as a daily driver and as my personal plow truck…

Thanks for any help

Mike

From what I've read on here, that seems to be the way to go. 5.29's for 35" and up, 4.88's covers you below 35". hope that helps!

Peep the link, few posts down might be what your looking for!

For my DD I run 5.29 and 32s. The extra torque is nice but the rpms get up around 3500 at 70mph and 3200 at 65pmh
