Are you ready??? Apple's doing it again!

There will be a new MacBook tomorrow...

13.3" screen, Dual Core, $999.

It won't be the "pro", it'll replace the aging iBook G4.

On a simialr note... a buddy just bought a MacMini. VERY nice.

Go Apple.

Whooptie-freakin-doo. I'm about to throw my powerbook out the window. I've got an office full of Mac's and have had nothing but problems with them.

I'd say that anyone who doesn't like Macs doesn't know of their abilities. I'd also wager that this alpha release of the MacBook could be quite buggy. Just like iBook G4's with the logic board issues. Either way, I want one :-D

Just got back from OKC to pick one up. It's for my step daughter who is going to college this fall. After the terrible problems we've had with the Dell we got her brother we decided to try this for her. At least with the Apple care she can take it in to have it serviced & not have to have someone in India walk her through diassembling it, like the Dell.

Yeah, I gotta get some anti-virus on there, and a firewall, and lol. Actually I do need to get open office on there for her, and a few other things.

I run OpenOffice at home, and (have to) run MS Office at work.

I'm generally fine with OO, it's smaller and just as capable with a better support mechanism. But, It's got some issues as well. Two things come to mind right away:
  1. In something as seemingly as simple as a PASTE operation from an outside app (all text) I _always_ get a message saying something about the target format not being supported. I have to Edit | Paste | Special to get it to work.

  2. For those folks with MSN Mail, you're gonna be ticked the first time you try to spellcheck an email. MSN Mail relies on one of the MS Office (or Works) apps to be installed in order to hook the spellchecker. I just found this out at a friend's over the weekend.

I've been looking for a compatible _free_ option to make MSN happy but can't find one.

...I thought of another issue with OO, a NASTY one.

side note: this may only affect the Windows implemention, dunno.

I had a document that was created with MSO and I used change tracking to keep track of what I'd done to it.

One night, I took it home, opened it in OO and it LOOKED like the tracking info was there. I made a change, brought it to work and... WHAM! All of the tracking info had been changed to just hard highlights (background color was set to yellow).

oops.

That took me a while to clean up...

But yeah, I still prefer OO to MSO - if for no other reason than it doesn't say "MS" in front of it.

Still alot of stumbling blocks using the minority challenged Apples but it's hard to beat their graphics software and their other official toys for it.

My roomie just got his in the mail two days ago.... it sure does look good in black! Let me just tell you how pissed I am about my PB G4 I got a couple days before Christmas...

For all you Mac haters, lets not forget that this can now dual boot xp and osx! Plus all the little things add up to make this one bad little machine. Anyone want a powerbook G4??

I've used a dual boot MacBook. My impressions:
  • Really fast, in OSX and Windows.
  • The Mac keyboard layout in Windows will confuse most. I'm sure there is a workaround, but I didn't get to play with it long enough to find one.
  • Windows actually runs faster on the Mac than OSX!

Don't believe my last point? Check out the latest copy of MaximumPC. They benchmarked it. Windows won every category but one.
