SanDisc 2 GB FLash Drive U3

Way to cool
http://u3.sandisk.com/tour/swf_no_wave/tour_en.asp

Rob (WATRD) turned me onto a thumb drive.
My local Best Buy has the 2 GB one on sale for $29, cheaper than the 1 GB one.

This thing is so cool and comes with a password filesafe, so I can store my passwords on it, and then access them with one master password.

I just installed Firefox on it, but have not tried it yet.
At work most PCs have both Firefox and Internet Explorer, but some do not have both.
Now I will be able to use Firefox if I want to, I can run it right off of this.
Going to see if I can import my cookies and bookmarks to it.

Installed a few free games too.

This is really a cool little unit.

I will throw some MP3s on here later too, and be able to play them while at work, and leave the iPod out in the rig hooked to the stereo.

Anyone have any interesting uses for these?

Well the cruzer micros dont work for this but many flash drives allow you to use a feature in windows vista called "ready boost" What that does is it uses the flash drive as page file space..but its MUCH faster than a hard drve. Its almost like adding more ram.

I use flash drives constantly at work (geeksquad..sigh)

the feature you like the U3.. is something i on the other hand HATE. It bothers me to have it open everytime i put the flash drive in. If i want to run applications i dont need u3.,,Heck.. i even have a flashdrive somehwere with windows xp on it.

I am getting errors trying to eject it.
I click on the link in the Launchpad to eject it, and it says an app is accessing it, but I unplug it anyways.

Also when running Firefox on it, it is not saving YotaTech to the navbar.
I drag and drop the URL for the site list to the navbar and it shows, but once you shut down the browser and access it again, the bookmark is gone.

I have not tried yet doing a bookmark the normal way to see if it will save it.

Also this is the older Firefox without spell checking, not the newer one like for Windows XP which I run.

I have a 1GB Sandisk Cruzer Titanium.

I really like it, but the U3 was aggravating to me, so I took it off.

This seems unlikely to me, since USB 2.0 thumb drives rarely break 15 Mb/s (the Sandisk Cruzer Titanium is rated at 15MB/s read speed & 9MB/s write speed), while SATA hard drives are as fast as 150Mb/s.

I use the same unit at work, in support of a Call Center. I keep my desktop images on it, bootable. Beats having to carry around CD's and really saves time when I have to re-image a machine. I only use my CD/DVD burner for backups, now. I figure it's paid for itself because of the CD-R's I don't need anymore.

I use it daily, sometimes several times a day. So far it's been solid as a rock.

I have used Firefox on it now a few times at work, works great.
I had to put the Boeing proxy into it though, as it would not connect otherwise.

The PC I am currently on here only has IE on it, so it is nice to fire the Sandisc up and surf with Firefox.

I have the 1 Gig I-Cruzer, there is actually a post about it from last summer I believe that the Wabbit started, his wife wanted to get one and put it on her keychain I think

Anways, it came in hand and I also agree, the set up with the software that is installed on it is very user friendly.

I have the 512mb. I wish I'd spent a little more, but I didn't even know what U3 was when i bought it. For the longest time I wished it would just go away.

I dig the U3 interface.
Makes it easy to install a new app on it.

I put Open Office on it the other day, although I have Office 2003 at home and at work it is on every single PC.

Correct you are, actully SATA 2 can run at 3gb\s, but this will never happen unless you are running some ungodly fast drives in a RAID 0 setup.

The reason with flash devices are so much faster than hard drives is because of access time. Flash memory doesnt have to spin and search for data. That is why readyboost works. Hard drives are horribly slow. They are going away any time soon because the $ per gigabyte is going so low. Some hard drive manufacturers are starting to put out Hybrid hard drives with part flash memory and part hard disc. There isnt much flash memory but this will allow the laptops to boot up in half the time and see an increased battery life.
