Problems with Windows, explorer/Task manager

Latley I've been having alot of instablity with windows explorer, and it continues to get worse and I have had trouble finding information through google.

Windows explorer continues to crash almost every time I do anything with my documents and folders like that.

Now it's gotten worse to the point that I can no longer use CTRL ALT DEL to bring up the task manager and fix the problem. I can't even get the task manager to come up at all. It freezes up and requires me to cut power to the computer and then restore it.

Anyone experiencing similar problems? Or know of a solution?

I'm running windows xp, on my toshiba, pentium 4 processor, etc. If you need more info I'll let you know.

Go to www.trendmicro.com and run a scan, it will show you either have a virus, worm, or nothing.

Get spyware terminator and run that (free) may find stuff..

Otherwise, your installation of windows is beyond repair, you need to format. May I suggest you back up any data you want on dvd's and scant hem before you even put the info back on your pc through that site?

I have a 400 gig external that I can store my stuff on. I have all my media, but none of my programs or settings. Is there a way to copy it all over, and then back?

Assuming no virus, a program like norton ghost ($$$ costs) will do this. However it is always best to start fresh over if you can.

So long as you have the install files, discs and other stuff you should be fine. I format at least yearly just cause, and often more b/c I lose data. Best invest I ever did was to store all my programs on a seperate hard drive and never download anything to it. Could do the same with a partition too..

Course this means you may have to reinstall or create shortcuts for some of them, but it works.

Ok, I'm pretty sure I have the discs for windows and the basic components. However, I don't have discs for things like firefox, Photoshop, lavasoft, google products that are installed, microsoft office, and some other things. If I have all the files from the program files folder, and the documents and settings folder, and things like that saved on my external hard drive, shouldn't I be able to just copy them back on to the hard drive after it is formatted? Then use that to install them again? I really don't want to lose alot of stuff I don't have discs for or things that have complex options and personal settings. not to mention my bookmarks in firefox, which I would never be able to remember.

You can only save the install files for these programs, you cannot simply copy the folders back it will not work on things like office, firefox, etc.

You can choose to export your bookmarks through firefox using the bookmarks manager and when you reinstall you can choose to import them in.

You cant save your personal settings and the like unless you do a full ghost copy and if any of those files have the problem (you did scan and found???) then your SOL....

Did you scan with any of that stuff I mentioned, did it find anything..

It wouldn't let me, because Mcafee is installed, and I can't uninstall it because I think it has been compromised.
