Music CD reading porblems, very odd

SO..... i have win amp, windows midea player, quicktime, all the various junk out there. No matter what CD i put in it will play about 6 or 7 songs and then it will get all staticy like when your listining to FM radio and driving out of the area. Eventually it will stop playing all together and the program will freeze. Closing the program and restarting it works for a while../.. this happens with every mucis cd and every drive ( ive tried 5 now ) and every program

What version of Windows are you using? If you are using an older version, you might want to try enabling DMA. It sounds like maybe it is clogging the system resources as it plays. Also try a virus scan and cleaning your computer. Have you tried using a drive with play controls on the front and just using those?

I had this exact problem about 2 years back on my old Toshiba laptop. They replaced the montherboard, combo drive, ram, processor, and hard drive twice. Formatted twice. We could never get it to work properly. That iced the cake for switching to Mac.

Have you looked in BIOS setup? Maybe the drives are not being detected properly or some other setting not right. Also try replacing the IDE cable.

Try a firmware update and driver update from the manufacture ??

Does it do it when you are listening to songs that have been ripped? Maybe you should try using the simpliest CD player that you can download, or maybe just the Windows player and see if that helps. Also check the IDE drivers if there are any and maybe your sound card drivers. Have you tried a CD-ROM with play buttons of the front of it by using just those buttons? That would tell me a lot. If you do not have a lot of important things on your computer, you might want to try doing a restore using the manufacturer CDs.

sounds like a controller issue. You said you have 5 CD-ROM drives in there? That could be the problem. Try disconnecting all but one drive and see if that works.

Have you tried listening to songs that are actually on the hard drive that have been ripped from a cd? As someone stated earlier, it might be a controller issue. Try moving the CD-ROM to a different port, maybe put it on the same cable with the hard drive and try putting it on its own. Do not forget to jumper it properly (master by itself, slave with the hard drive).

Okay, let me clairfy. I have 5 cd rom drives, only one installed at at time. I can listen to all my previously ripped songs just fine.

If it was a controller problem wouldnt it also effect software cds too? or data cds? because those work just fine.

Also it shares a cable with a hardrive allready, and bothr hard drive and cdrom are set for cable select.\

I really appreasiate all the imput, and they have been helping me at least learn more about computers.

Try jumpering the hard drive for master and the CD-ROM for slave. Probably will not help the situation, but it is an easy thing to try. Also try putting the CD-ROM on its own IDE cable. That is also an easy thing to try.
