Samsung HDTV 46" with PC In on the back of the TV
Manual says to use a D sub cable and a pc audio cable
TV is up on the wall and I can't look at the connection without taking the tv down, really don't want to do that right now so I only have to do it ONCE.

I got a 18 pin DVI cable that came with the computer will this work?

Not really sure what is the best way to hook this thing up?

DVI to HDMI?

I don't want to have to make 10 trips to town trying and buying the wrong connectors.

Don't think my PC has HDMI hookup but like I said it does have the DVI hookup.

if your gonna use a dvi keep in mind it will not have audio. HDMI conncetion if the only thing that has audio going threw it. dvi to hdmi convert or vise versa will not have audio either.

a d-sub connector is the old style vga connection for older monitors.

The TV should have both DVI and HDMI inputs, but your video card on the computer can have a bunch of different connections. Mine has HDMI and DVI and also came with a DVI to D-sub adapter.

DVI is favored over d-sub and hdmi is the best you can go with. My suggestion if your tv has the hdmi input is to get a video card that supports the hdmi with audio and get an hdmi cable long enough to reach the tv.

 

hey Wab, xxxtreme is right about the difference between the cables but did not get you the detail. first off i do agree with xxxtreme about the hdmi is the way to go but if your comp. dose not support hdmi then it is not longer an option. unless you want to spend money on a vid. card that supports hdmi that will not get you a better image. Also you did not mention if the comp you are using is a laptop or desktop, which make some difference as you can not change the vid.card on a laptop. So excluding the hdmi as an option you will need at least two cables, One for sound and one for image. i do recommend using the dvi as the signal stays digital for the image. The audio will depend on the audio inputs on your TV. Some TV's have the 1/8" audio input but not all, so you will need an adapter cable that goes from 1/8" to white and red AV cable ends.

 

Surfing YT on my 46" Samsung HDTV now.

New HDMI video card and a HDMI cable and I'm good to go. Going to get a custom longer cable made and run it in the wall like I did for my PS3 and the cable and then I can hide the cpu.

It will take some getting used to as it is a different look but I like the freedom since I already had a wireless mouse and keyboard it was easy. Took about 15 minutes and a trip to town to get it going. Cost me less than $125.

Now if we just got Yotatech in HD.

 

xxxtreme22r is correct in what he posted, but one minor detail: a lot of PC HDMI ports don't support HDMI audio (HDMI v1.x vs. HDMI v2.x). If you can get a HDMI-2-capable card for the PC, you're golden.

Otherwise, you should plan on wiring the PC audio cable separately from video.

Regarding video, your options are (in this order of preference):

HDMI (check the PC)
DVI (check the specs on your TV, a lot of HD TVs have no DVI, sadly)
D-Sub ("old VGA") connector

If I am not mistaken these are the only card that supposrt hdmi w/audio:

ATI Radeon HD 5800, HD 5700, HD 4800, HD 4600, HD 4300, HD 3800, HD 3600 & HD 3400 models

nvidia builds cards with hdmi also.

 

While nvidia has the ability to do audio over hdmi, it does not have a built in sound device, you are forced to use a cable from your existing sound card which needs an internal SPDIF.

And for someone that might be new to this they are not very user friendly.

The ATI's just take the guess work out of everything hardware wise.

only reason i know that is because i just upgraded my video card and was researching and read some info about hdmi and the spdif lol. are you using an hdmi cable?

 

nope. no lcd tv. but have been in the market for one for a while. Would have had one by now but my engine rebuild put me back some. No LCD monitor either. Web design does better on an old crt screen so thats all i have on all of my 4 comps. Except the one laptop i got.

1 laptop (vista), 1 linux (centos 5) server, 2 windows (7 and xp) desktops and a linux (fedora) proxy

 

So you can get an hdmi without sound. What sound card will allow me to run surround to my receiver?
