Flickr for Google?

Is there now, or will there ever be, a version of Flickr for Google? I've got Picasa and I've checked out Hello. Hello is alright, but it's not a website. Others aren't going to download and install the software, register for an account, and set it all up just to look at your pics.

I would think Google would have already released something for this. I really like Flickr, but I'm a Google guy.

What do you need it to do? I have a flickr account and to my knowledge, no one has had a problem looking at any of my pictures.

I just retried it, and you don't need to be logged in to view someone's pics.

I don't have a Flickr account, but I look at shots on there a lot.

That's the thing... I like the idea behind Flickr, and the functionality of the site itself. However, it's a Yahoo product. My loyalties lie with Google. It's just a weird thing about me. Yahoo does have some cool stuff, such as Yahoo Widgets and Flickr. Mozilla developers are coming out with a new browser geared towards Yahoo users called Flock that I'm actually using right now and kicks ass for what it does. It's still a very early beta, but I haven't had any problems with it. They actually have a good page describing what you can expect from using it.

I guess I'm just kinda disappointed seeing this cool stuff and wishing Google had it too. I'm gonna look around their site and see what I can find.

It's cool stuff. Make sure you pay special attention to the installation process, and where you tell it to look, or it'll find EVERY picture on your computer. I mean stuff like icons and bmp files and things you don't want showing up.

Do you have any compelling reason for supporting Google so much? I mean, why not just pick the best product. It's not like either Yahoo or Google comes up with much "new" things anymore, they are both just buying startups (Flickr being one of the them). Why fault flickr for being bought by Yahoo instead of Google?

I used flickr before it was bought by Yahoo, and it hasn't negatively changed, so I'm pretty happy with Yahoo for that.

Google tends to offer better benefits. Yahoo caps things somewhat strictly compared to todays standards unless you want to pay. I can only get 20mb storage and have 3 sets with Flickr's free account. I'd have to pay $20 a year for their pro account to get something that Google would probably offer for free, just like everything else they offer. Plus, from my experience, Google stuff tends to be designed better too.

I think Flickr offers 20mb a month, not total. I have a lot more than 20mb of pictures up, and I don't pay a thing. Now I don't keep all my pictures up there, no point, but Flickr is comparable to anything out there.

Now, would I love to have Google offer something w/ unlimited space, sure, but the fact is they don't, because it would cost them too much money. For now, Flickr is the best thing available.

Regarding software, once again, Flickr was NOT written by Yahoo.. and I'm glad for that, because I agree w/ you that Google puts out better products as far as software goes.

Ah! I see that now.

I don't think Google is worried about bandwidth or server space. They give it out like candy. They're still working towards unlimited storage in Gmail, but with almost 3 gigs now, I'm only 9% full and I never delete any of my mail.

It just seems that with a great photo organizer/editor in Picasa, that it would make sense to have online photo hosting.

I'm aware of that. I didn't mean to imply that Yahoo wrote Flickr. Google has also aquired some of it's programs from other companies, such as Google Earth from Keyhole. I should have said the direction Google goes with them once aquired has been better, IMO. Thank God Yahoo hasn't changed Flickr. I just don't like their way of coding. Have you tried out Yahoo Mail Beta? The outlay and idea of it is awesome, but the way it actually works isn't.

Actually, in their latest filing, their president mentioned that they are basically out of space on their servers and that that is the most critical thing they are facing now. But yeah, take some space from gmail and give us somewhere to put our pictures.

I totally agree.

I actually am a Gmail'er all the way. I think I have like 5 different accounts on Gmail. I'll only change if someone gives me a REALLY good reason to do so.

2 other sites I've found that work similar to Flickr:

www.zoto.com

www.zooomr.com - supposedly a 17 year old guy designed this site.

Zooomr is awesome. It's got this feature called LightBox, which reminds me alot of Mac OSX's Dashboard or that feature in Yahoo's Widget Engine that creates a Dashboard similar screen. I like it!

I'll check it out, thanks.

**Edit**

I clicked on "go discover" and the first picture up was your avatar! I thought that was weird.

Ask and ye shall receive:

http://picasaweb.google.com/home.

I like it a LOT. Only 250 mb storage right now, but it's in testing stage. The new Picasa that only comes with a registered account can upload files directly to it.
