Cable modem overheating?

Cable modem overheating?
I did a search and couldn't find exactly what I needed, so here is the question: Has anyone ever had trouble with a cable modem overheating? My parents' cable internet began going out a few months ago. I figured out that by resetting the modem, service would be back for a while. It is now to the point where it must be reset every 15 to 30 minutes to continue use. The data light quits blinking and it it making a high pitched squeal (like some TV tubes make). Someone told me that this is because it is overheating. Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

im assuming when this happens the modem becomes very hot to the touch? i keep my router and my modem stacked, so it gets really hot, but i have not had it cut out... definetely a possibility though, id call the cable company and complain about the crap service, and insist that they fix it (they will diagnose it), and if its a rental modem replace it right away.

The modem is stacked, but the temperature doesn't feel any warmer than I think it should. The person who told me that it was overheating claimed that there was a part on the motherboard of the modem that would be "burned" by certain signals through the cable. Any way, they have had this one for a while, so I guess we need a new one. They are not planning to move or change services, so we will buy one. Do you have any favorites? (This one is a Toshiba, I have a Linksys and I like it)

ther has to be a short in or near the modem to make it that hot...calland have the modem replace by your ISP or just go buy a different one......my modem was supplied by SBC and if it goes out they do a replacement.....find out if your ISP doe the same...most major ones do that to retain your service......good luck

The Motorola Surfboard 5100 seems to be the hot one discussed all the time over on DSL Reports.

I plan on getting this one myself later.
In the above post a poster states the one I currently am using is not compatible with the upgrade that just took place with my ISP, but he is wrong.
My modem works fine.
But yeah, go for the Motorola 5100.

We got a toshiba from cox when we first signed up, after about a year it needed frequent reboots. another 6 months and it was so bad we returned it, and bought our own, a motorola. Have had it about a year and no problems, we'll see how it does over the next year or so. When we returned the toshiba they told us they have about a year lifespan.

When I first started with cable, my ISP supplied me a Motorola "Surfboard". It was piece of "du-du". I changed to a Linksyss cable modem. Five years later no problems what so ever. I even have it stacked with my Linksyss wireless router, no heating problems.

I have corrected the problem with the purchase of a new Linksys cable modem. I have read reviews, and both it and the Motorola had good ratings. I bought the Linksys because my other network hardware is Linksys an I have had bad luck with two Motorola wireless NICs. After replacing the 4-5 year old Toshiba modem, I noticed drastic increase in speed and no more disconnections. Thank yall for the advice.
