Blog vs. Discussion Forum

Blog vs. Discussion Forum

Can anyone enlighten me on the finer points of the differences?

I need to put something together for a family reunion next summer (and all the chit chat to get the details worked out).

a blog is more like a journal, for others to come and make comments on, agree with your P.O.V, etc..

this here is a discussion forum, which sounds much more like what you're looking for. and that's about as in-depth i can go on the differences. but, i'm assuming you already knew those 'finer' points.

yeah, i was going to say it depends -- if you want a place to dictate what's going to happen, then a blog would be best ... if you want it to be a place more inviting to the opinions and stuff of your other family members, then a discussion forum would be the way to go.

Mike, you could always just put up a section on your tool forum and link them to it, and discuss the planning in it.

A blog is more one person's point of view, and possibly some comments/reactions - but everything that happens in/on a blog is started by the "owner".

A discussion forum is more like a free-for-all, as you can see on sites like this one.

Cebby - phpBB is pretty easy... I run it on one of my sites. In some ways I like it better than vbulletin, in some ways I don't. Both have plusses and minuses, as they say.

That will probably be the easiest... Good idea! I'll just make a new usergroup and only give them access to that section.

Lee - I'm trying to setup this thing and I can't get past the first screen.

It is asking for an FTP site? I never had to do this with vBulletin, nor do I have any FTP sites setup. I use CuteFTP to upload stuff to my sites, but that didn't require any special server side stuff.

the only thing it requires is that your host give you sql or mysql server access.

does your host provide that?

if so, then go into the admin panel at your hosts site and set up a new server account, assigning it a username and pw.

thats pretty much all it needs. i forgot about that aspect of it, so i apologize that i made it sound so easy.. but it IS easy once you get it going!

let me know if i can help ya, ive done it a few times

PHPBB is an easy choice. Install it, swap in the skin you like and be on your way. You can get as complicated as you wish or leave it very basic and you have excellent access control.
