Talking Usb Gps??

ok guys, I just got a laptop, and I was wondering what the best USB GPS device is? I have no idea where to even begin.. so links would be greatly appreciated (or just a model name so I can google it). Also, what features should I be looking for software wise?

thanks!

I have been looking at this USB GPS for my laptop. I am still leaning toward the handheld units though.

Nice catch, I over looked that. I wouldn't get that because I want to run it with NG topo.

I run my Garmin with NG Topo. I have a Garmin V, so maybe just look into it further??

That is a nice GPS. I like the Garmin 60CS but will end up getting a lower end model that I can use with NG Topo. I like the Garmin 18 but it says it works with Garmin software only.

You don't have to use a USB unit. I'm currently using a Garmin Legend with a Cables To Go USB to Serial adapter. It works great and it allows you to take it with you when hiking.

If I were you I would go with the Garmin 60CS. It is very nice. I use it with my laptop, and can't complain one bit.

I use my Garmin StreetPilot-III with my laptop. The map memory has a USB programmer for it and then the waypooints and other data can be transferred via a USB->serial cable adapter. It works well. I want to make up a spacial power cable with the data port built-in so I can plug into a data port down on the dash if I want the laptop to be conected. Sometimes nice having the larger screen for finding your way off-road.

actually, I just got one (usb mouse, no display) off ebay for $50 + shipping. it supports the NMEA protocol, so I can use pretty much any mapping software.. can't wait for it to get here!

but thanks for the tip

Wink

I just noticed this thread. I have the e-bay usb gps mouse connected to my rig 's computer with the gps sensor right below the dash. Works pretty well and is hidden. As for software Microsoft streets and trips is a good program it lacks voice navigation though, I use Delou Routis. It has a decent interface plus it will give voice directions problem is they discontinued producing the program. There also is Delorme I have never used Street Atlas made by them but have heard good things about the program.

Having the setup has saved my butt many a time in new cities I find myself lost in. Having a map is great but when you don't know where your are on that map you can be in quite a quandry. Having the GPS setup is great it makes driving so much easier.
