GPS Receiver

Anyone have GPS receiver hooked up to a laptop in their rigs? I was in the market for a handheld unit but stumbled across this alternative. Any good/bad brands? How to mount the laptop? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Gps 18

I just picked up the Garmin GPS 18 and software from GPSNOW.com... Think I paid 130 shipped. Nice piece but too short of a cord. Software is very detailed maybe a little too good... Can't install the whole thing not enough room on my hard drive. Still trying to figure a way to mount the laptop without interfering with the shifters.

Have you looked into Delorme's laptop gps? It seems better than microsoft's gps, but I don't know how it compares to garmin. I was planning on eventually getting delorme's, but maybe I'll look into garmin's too.

I heard of Garmin and Magellen. Not too familiar with the rest. I figured I'd ask the message board. It'ss always good to hear pros and cons from those who have the stuff. Is Delorme good?

I've seen good comments about delorme stuff (mostly their topo software) from YT people, though I don't know personally how good their gps stuff is.

I am usuing the USB GPS that came with Street and Trips and it works okay dosn't have voice but it does work pretty well. I have been tossing around mounting a 7" touch screen in my truck so I got one to see how well it interfaced to the Laptop this weekend, it worked fairly well actually. I did a temp mockup to test it out on the road and it works okay just now have to figure a way to mount this thing into the dash.

Looks pretty sweet! I have a panasonic toughbook laptop which has a touchscreen. Only problem is it's kind of big and would be kind of hard to mount. I do have an audiovox screen that I got from a portable DVD player which was the second screen. It's not touchscreen. In fact, I dont even know if they make a cable that would go to my laptop since it looks like the only monitor connections are for audio/video. How much did you pay for the touchscreen?

Cost was around $225.00 (free shipping) on Ebay from a vendor in NC I think he was. It seem to work pretty good has USB interface for the touch screen and VGA connection for computer and 2 more video inputs for say a Playstation or maybe a backup camera or something. I was running 1024X768 and could still read the screen okay I thought. Yeah thats not the permanet location I want to flush mount that thing on the dash some how, just need to figure out how and were next
