GPS Mounting

What do you use? I just ordered a Garmin Rhino 120 and want a place to put it when it gets here.
The best one they have on ebay is $50 and has all kinds of poo you don't need for a pda and mp3 player. Then there is the air vent holders, but I want something a little more sturdy, don't you think? Does anybody have experience with those? I just figure if i'm off-road I'm going to want something sturdy. I'm also probably going to mount my Cobra C75 on it to so I definately want it stury come to think of it... How did you do yours??

I have one of those vent ones off ebay. It was on sale/no shipping so i bought it. I have to admit it holds better than I thought, but it really is as cheap and flimsy as it looks. My GPS is a Magellan and the car adapter hooks up to the back of the unit. I have found the clip holds best when I drape the cord over the back of the clip so that the cord attachment supports much of the weight and bounce of the GPS. If I don't do that, the thing falls off on the first stretch of bumpy road. If I knew of a better way to mount my unit I would go for it. The Magellan-brand bracket is way too big and has huge suction cups for attaching to the windshield. no way do I want that ugly setup in my truck.

Thanks for the heads up, I think i'm going to get something more sturdy. Maybe something custom and cool, I'll be sure and post what I end up with.

I just have an air vent cell phone holder. I think it works pretty darn good myself.
I flattened the back of my GPS with a knife, then superglued the tab to the GPS. Mine came with 3M tape, but Krazy Glue works much better

I have a Garmin 60CS which is similar in shape to the rhinos. I am using the Garmin cradle with the windshield suction cup and it does a great job. Haven't gone off road with it yet, but think it would hold up really well. There is no chance that it is coming out of the cradle. At worst, the suction might give but that’s it. It also puts the gps unit in an ideal location for reception. Therefore, you will not need an external antenna. The trick is to wedge it between the windshield and the dash.

I also have one of the metal cell phone holders that mounts to the center console w/ the stereo screws. I forget the name, but most people have it. I think Corey has it. Anyway, that would also be a cheap, secure mounting platform. But I don’t know if you would get as good a reception with it lower like that.

I am a big fan of RAM-MOUNT holders. They are very well made and have a lifetime warranty.

RAM-MOUNT Homepage.

Their website is kind of hard to navigate. I usually get my GPS stuff through Adventure GPS. Their prices are competetive and the customer service is excellent.

Corey:

Do you ever have trouble getting a signal with your GPS mounted there? Just wondering....
