My Magellan Explorist 500 NA with the windshield suction cup mount and Topo 3D or even the street route maps works fairly well.

Pros: Very portable and can easily be taken out of the vehicle for a hike
Battery lasted a couple days while I was using it to map
mineral deposits for a geology class a few years ago

Cons: Small screen, joystick has started to come apart, and I lost the little holder
to use AAA batteries instead of the LI battery if I couldn't charge it

OP-I have a nice handheld Garmin etrex Legend cx works great for when I go wheelin in the woods. Has a micro SD slot for loading on maps and it's a color screen. Will also do turn, by turn directions.
